Once I had started to think of the plot, I then shifted my focus to the characters that would populate the story. Not sure yet.

Almost half our outline for AGNES AND THE HITMAN, with Jenny Crusie, was backstory. We had to figure out what had actually happened in a key event 25 years ago. Then, where our heads exploded, was we had to know what each character REMEMBERED happening. Remember, memory is shaped by perception. So each person had a different perception. Also, flashback and memory are two different things. Flashback is what happened, memory is what someone remembers happening and is warped by what they want now.

I have a love/hate relationship with backstory. I have to know it, understand it, develop it, deal with it, even write it, so long as it doesn't end up in said book. If that makes sense. Always easy for me to pick it out of someone else's story, but my own? Uh-huh, yeah, right.

This is a timely post. I'm currently working on characters and developing them within the frame of my story. Truthfully, it hasn't been going so well lately. I'm stuck. I'm working, digging, writing, doing whatever I can to flesh them out, I just haven't hit the high note yet. Some tell me to just write the book, it will come to me. I have a hard time doing that. I want to know certain things so I don't write myself into a corner or have characters that are too stupid to live. I am fairly confident I will get there, though I have to admit the dreaded "I suck" syndrome has returned. Well, on ward and forward, or whatever. Must get back to characters....
