Interestingly, after several months of research and outlining, I am starting on my new novel. Three days into November and I'm already at 10,000 words. More importantly, I'm very happy with the process. The opening of a book is so critical. It sets the characters for the rest of the book. I'm mixing fictional with historical characters and that is a particular challenge. I have to capture Ulysses S. Grant, Tecumseh Sherman, and others into my story and capture them at times of their lives when little has been written about them. It is indeed a challenge.
