I usually get the surprised look when people ask me “what do you do in your free time?” and I reply with –

* Writing
* Music

They assume because I’m working in a scientific/mathematical world, it means that surely I can’t be creative! I find that being able to use both sides of the brain really helps in being able to not only develop the idea of a story, but it also helps in planning. Since excel is awesome 😉 I was excited to see lots of use for it in the “Novel Writer’s Toolkit”. (Almost finished reading that!)

Actually you would be surprised. Engineering is a creative field, though many people don’t realize that. I know a lot of thriller authors who are engineers and I nearly went back for my Masters in Structural Engineering, so again, you’d be surprised. Excel is definitely something writers can use. I am sure you’d be of great help. Awesome to have you here :D.

I have become “the excel guy” at both my work and also for friends, family and even businesses external to my own. I enjoy getting into it to create programs and tools (yes you can do that with excel!) to help people maximise their time and effort.

(FYI I am an Engineer who also writes fiction. Oil and water?)

That is a good point. The yellow copies, particulary fade very quickly. But, I have found that reciepts fare far worse in the floorboard of my car and the bottom of my purse-ha ha ha. Yeah, I tend to be a procrastinator, especially doing things I don’t like…like spreadsheets and expenses. Thanks, Didi for the nice comment.

Thanks Kristin! Remember, some receipt papers don’t hold the ink. Its not always a good idea to wait all year. You may not be able to read those receipts after a few months, let along all year.
