Hmm, isn’t it just that literary fiction focuses more on character than an outward plot and the outward plot exists to externalize the inner conflict. To me The Old Man and the Sea is a particularly literary piece 😛

The lead was thrown into so much shit and the wonder of the book that she just kept going. Sometimes I just sat and screamed “why don’t you walk away?!” but her attachment to the people in need (people who treated her like crap) was too great.
