I was just dumped by a man whose been telling me he's going to marry me partly because I'm deathly allergic to tree nuts. I try to be as low key about my allergy as possible, but I need to stay safe. I'm very careful about what I eat and have therefore had very few close calls since I was a child. Bud and his sister got ugly with me because I refused to eat a bite of a dessert that was being shared. Bud wouldn't brush his teeth and wash his face off so I could give him a New Years kiss, and Bud had a cow that I wouldn't eat breakfast at The Cracker Barrell, where they cook pecan pancakes on the only grill, and have a warning two inches high on the menu basically telling you if your allergic its your problem. As a matter of fact the Cracker Barrel incident was so upsetting that I wrote to them for the second time in my life imploring them not to put nuts on the grill when 1 to 2 people in 100 are allergic to nuts!!! Every 3 to 4 percent of families have a nut allergic person in the family. That 1 in 25 families. Are pecans that important to pancakes? Denny's is another restaurant that has succumbed to protein pancakes. Sonorara Denny's. I used to love to drop in for breakfast for dinner there. No longer!!!!! And, back to Bud...., he has a tradition of baking 80 pecan pies for friends for Christmas...., he did this right before my visit at his home for 9 days. Considerate hmmmm???!!! People just don't get it!!!! I had a first grade teacher who forced me to take a bite of a raisin nut cookie when I was six, put me into anaphylaxis. I had a manager at a restaurant I worked at when I was 17yo slather my hamburger with peanut butter when I was at work. He didn't know I'm one of those odd balls whose allergic to tree nuts but not peanuts, which are really legumes. Restaurants and airlines bend over backwards for gluten intolerants, vegans and vegetarians.... But for those with true life threatening allergies they do little to nothing. They do for peanuts but not other allergies. I know the problems of trying to pack enough food for long haul flights..... Not as easy as you think!!!! Anyway, dating and life are difficult enough.... It would be nice to have a little understanding and compassion for a problem people like myself didn't ask for, can do nothing about, but are forced to live with everyday of their life!!!! Yeah, Bud dumped me. Partly for the allergy and partly for the ex wife of a plastic surgeon who got several million in the divorce. Just shows what a shallow loser he is. I hope he'll get his from her.

I know exactly what you mean about the doctor disbelief. One of my many allergies is to nitrile—those non-latex gloves a lot of medical practitioners use in the US. I've had folks argue with me and try to tell me I'm actually allergic to latex. I can be around nitrile, but I can't touch them. Kills my epidermis, turning it like dried glue.

Have you ever pursued treatment via natural practitioner, like functional medicine or integrative medicine? (Those are the two types I've had success with, at least for identifying the biological cause. That the treatment didn't succeed long-term has less to do with the practices and more to do with the reason I am now hundreds of miles from family.)

There's one particular practitioner of the latter who can ID pretty much everything your body's sensitive to, right now, and going on an elimination diet and treating the cause of the allergies (often adrenal stress) can help reduce or remove some of those sensitivities. (Her specific method is something that she developed, herself, and thanks to her, I can eat garlic and onion again, among some other things.) Didn't catch things in time to stop the allergies to carrots and coconut from developing, though.

I hope you can find & treat the cause of all your allergies, to at least keep from developing more!

I also developed peanut and tree but allergies as an adult. As a child pb made my tummy hurt so I didn't eat it as much as posable. I had other food allergies but mostly mild. About 4 years ago that changed I have had many full attacks of using the eppy for nuts and just like you listed a contact one from my sons candy made in a factory with nuts I just touched the desk he touched. I have a large amount of other medical problems that makes treating a reaction something I'm told to take the more aggressive approach first. Even many dr's don't believe you about allergy reactions I'm finding the reports in my records shocking one dr said I used my eppy to get high from it and knew it would give me a headache requiring medical help I plan on pressing charges on him. I found another dr said my rash was not that bad he thinks it's from poor skin and increased the med I was allergic to and wrote a new form of it. People at my husbands job make jokes about my not going to pot lucks and his family thinks I'm crazy that only kids get new or worse reactions to things. I have also been openly trolled on websites just like your pictures show. My son is 12 and hates this about me if he only knew I hate it myself. On a funny note I got a flask I keep liquid allergy med in. One of my good dr'a suggested the worse allergies might have something to do with blood products I got after a car crash and again with heart surgery. People with large allergies should not donate blood if that's the case. I'm glad you lived through this and sad that you also live with this battle. I started having trouble with coconut and palm kernel oil both in a lesser tree but family most people don't react to them as nuts. Coconut oil is used in most soaps thank God it's not a contact issue hope it stays that way. I hope you don't let any nuts in your house. I don't even use pens that are not mine or touch much while out due to contact reactions. Sorry this is so long.

I just pinpointed my nuts allergy a couple of years ago. Such a bummer, but better than having to swear off shellfish. The thing that ticks me off is that it's clearly tied to food additives. GMOs gotta go! These issues aren't cropping up, pun intended, because of accumulation - not when they're attacking kids, who haven't been eating nuts for half a century.
I have even had to give up my beloved Lay's potato chips which claim to use oils other than peanut but will blister my nose faster than pine nuts in my pesto (FYI I make it without pine nuts using basil from our garden and it's quite tasty without). Formulations have changed in many products and the body doesn't lie, can't lie, in expressing a virulent reaction. Same with health and beauty products: my mom is now allergic to mascara. Life goes on and I'm glad you're OK and speaking out. Ultimately that's the answer: When a product makes us sick we need to let others know.
