I think that’s a wonderful idea for NaNo, MT. A quick pass through your major characters to clarify them and their wants and needs, then plunge them into the situation afresh.

So great to read this as I’m currently looking at an old manuscript, with exactly the problems you describe, which I’m thinking of rewriting, from scratch, for nano. So far I’ve kind of unconsciously been doing what you recommend which is why this article is so heartening… because seeing it all written out here makes so much sense.

My characters tend to come act out their lives in my head during hot showers. Therefore, I spend a lot of October and November with dry pruny skin…

It’s really quite lovely. Now, if I could only convince my Accomplice of this….

One trick I’ve used is to interview my characters. Ask them a list of questions and see what the responses are. I asked one character how he earned a living, and he replied, “I’m an IRS informant. Didn’t you see the sign in the driveway as you came in?” He was lying, of course, but it gave me an insight into the sarcastic nature of his personality.
