To my knowledge, Historical is actually a subcategory. Like you have the main category ROMANCE, then you would write HISTORICAL ROMANCE. Or you might have ACTION ADVENTURE, CIVIL WAR HISTORY, HISTORICAL.

If you think about the old days, unless you were writing a HISTORY BOOK (which would be Non Fiction), historical was shelved with the mother genre. You have "The Great Gatsby" and "The Count of Monte Cristo" shelved in general fiction, even though nowadays (when using an algorithm) we would add those additional descriptive tags.

But Historical is a descriptor, not a genre. Does that help? And if you aren't selling books, you might need to look at how your book is listed and if the algorithms are picking it up. That can be a meta data problem.

You forgot to include Historical Fiction in your list of genres. This is my favorite genre. I am now writing my 4th historical fiction novel. I was eager to see what you would say about the genre because I have not received one dime from any of the publishers, the first was published in 2018. Maybe I've been doing it wrong.

[…] If you want to know what rules apply to the genre you plan on writing, you should pick up some of the best selling authors in your genre. I wouldn’t necessarily go with the big names in your genre as they can frequently get away with breaking some rules that you as a newbie won’t be allowed to break. I posted a good link here: https://upsdownsfamilyhistory.wordpress.com/2019/05/25/choosing-a-genre-anatomy-of-a-best-selling-story-part-7-kristen-lamb/.
