I found that you can describe settings by the characters feeling of the place. I could say it was a mess but saying the room made your characters skin crawl and want to wash his hands would show the disgust better. Its especially great if you don't want to describe a room in detail and just want the feeling. "Barb never felt more inadequate in her neatness then walking into Sharon's craft room. After the 4th drawer she finally found the scissors she needed." You don't need to describe the crazy clean organized room when it's only used for a second but the readers get the idea.

This is a great article.

[…] https://authorkristenlamb.com/2018/03/writing-unforgettable-settings/ “Setting is an extremely powerful toolthat can hook readers into a world they never want to leave. Oddly, too many writers fail to appreciate just how powerful settings can be. Details make the difference between the mediocre and the magnificent. Settings, written properly, can come alive and transition from boring backdrop to becoming an actual character (I.e. Hogwart’s).” I always worry I’ll bore the reader but I’ve been trying to add more setting to my scenes lately. […]

Yes! “Place/Setting” is like another character!

Though, if a writer over-describes, I’m bored. I’m reading a novel now from an author I adore but there’s so much description of “place” - rooms, buildings, houses, this’s and that’s - I find myself wanting to skim. So, yes, that balance of capturing the reader without losing them!
