I agree with most of those who say they dislike subscribing to get an author's email or blog. I don't "subscribe" to any anymore after often being inundated with emails, bored to death by the newsletters and blogs I received, or finding it the dickens to unsubscribe. Because my fans kept asking for both though (I'll soon have twenty books out) ... I finally gave in a few years ago and started both a monthly newsletter and a monthly blog - finally. To be less annoying, I chose to put both my short newsletter (what's up and what's happening) and my longer blog entry (on some subject of interest with visuals) on my author website. The newsletter is under the "Newsletter" tab created for it, the blog under the "Blog" tab created for it. At events, book signings, and on social media, I let my fans know I have both and that I post both at the first of the month....The newsletter changes out every month; the blog is archived. This has worked well for me. My fans who like to read my stuff and who enjoy newsletters and blogs can find me themselves at their convenience and avoid having to get yet more emails to week through and avoid having to subscribe to keep up with me. ... You can check out what I do at: www.linstepp.com

I just stumbled upon your post about newsletters and laughed out loud, then my mischievous muse clicked the SUBSCRIBE button. I did a revamping of my author newsletter last week, in an attempt to increase the amount of "opens" because they have been pretty shabby lately. (Very few unsubscriptions, though.) I, too, would rather blog than write newsletters, which I send to my subscriber list on a monthly basis.

Thanks for the laughs and great insight. I’ve written and published six books, and the marketing has been the greatest challenge. Oh—and as a compassionate vegetarian—I definitely prefer free-range tomatoes!

Hi Cyndi, author newsletters are extremely important to not only a books success but to an authors success as well. It provides a way for you to be in direct contact with your readers and keep yourself as an author in the forefront of your mind. I have more advice for authors on my blog www.melissahawkes.com

You are really funny! This article made me click on your author profile on Amazon. Once I finish the pile of books I'm currently into, I want to read yours.

I don't have much to say about newsletters. I am a newbie with my debut novel, Sisters of the Silk Veil, only released last month. I do know I plan to only send newsletters to those who have signed up via my website.

Thank you for your information and your delightful wit!

I like newsletters. I developed my preferred way of consuming the Internet fifteen years ago when me and the 'net were young and it's moved on and no one's forced me to, so I haven't. I especially like them now I don't use RSS any more. It's nice to have some email that I actually look forwards to instead of inane 'special' offers that I can't mark as spam because I very occasionally buy something from them and updates on petitions that I can't remember signing. Oh, and push notifications. I hate them.

There are a few authors I follow on Twitter, but... How do you even stay up-to-date with authors these days? 240 characters isn't enough for me to feel like I know you.
