We used to do that in the early days on line. But so many of the good writing bloggers no longer post and have moved onto other things.
Crazy idea: Maybe a writer should make a search engine that only brings up results for other writers websites, blogs and such. So we are all linked together? and maybe each website can link to other writers websites that they like? Or maybe that's done already? and readers looking for something new to read can go search this search for books and buy directly from the authors? Sorry if that's a bad idea.

Frankly amazon is starting to become a pain for searching for new books as it's too big at times.

I worked at B&N for 7 years, the only decent retailer I'd ever work for. It was the heyday of the book business, the store was gorgeous, most of the employees loved books, and people congregated not just in the cafe but in the aisles. As the e-reading dragon took over, B&N tried to compete, even hiring tech specialists to assist customers in the store with the Nook. All seven years I was employed by them, I kept noting that they never advertised - they believed there was no competition. We outlasted Borders, Crown, and lots of independents. And if you saw the lines of people lined up outside the store on the evenings before the newest Harry Potter became available, you'd believe it too. Finally B&N was getting outdone not only in the e-reader market, but in every market. Amazon sold the same books at a discount while B&N continued to promote a membership program that gave little return for its purchase. Still, as company practice goes, B&N was a decent model. We employees were treated fairly and trained competently. I loved my seven-year, part time, seasonal job with them, just wish they'd seen the dawn rising over the horizon. Glad to see the independents returning. Thanks for a thoughtful article.

Beautifully written and wise post, Kristen! One stop shopping, ease of doing business is still so popular that people are willing to pay Prime, Costco and B&N "memberships" in order to shop there and get the "good" deals. I worked at Borders, where the biggest seller was the "Saw" movies, not books. Then Borders decided to focus on paper products(cards, wrapping, bows etc) and more movies and then the book sections got smaller and smaller. I see the same at B&N as they keep expanding the toy section! Are they even selling toys? Now they looking more like a mini toysrus inside a book store. Perhaps authors need to develop a membership fee (guaranteed income and part of the "service industry" mentality) with a snappy selling tool of how this will absolutely benefit the reader to come on board??!! Don't think it will happen unless it's in some sort of creative collective. Maybe. Bottom line: Amazon continues to make it too darn easy. That being said, I still love to hold (physically) and glance through a book before I buy it. But then I loved doing the same thing at Blockbuster or Hollywood Video every Friday night with the family! And we know how that turned out - but I still miss those days!!

Good to know it wasn’t just me. I was muzzled in my sophomore English class for being the only one that knew anything about Greek Mythology. This was of course right as I was pushing out of the “shy and quiet” shell. In college, I had to remind myself to let other people answer sometimes, especially when I knew that I was the only person in class with a different opinion. And, if I remember correctly, I read Tolkien in middle school. I’m still learning to be able to have an opinion without being a jerk.
