I always learn so much from your posts and wind up pinning to return to later for reference. This one is no exception. Without strong characters, the story is flat as a pancake without any syrup. Thanks, Kristen!

Kristen, your post arrived at the perfect time for me. Your example of the "alpha female who wasn't" could have been the character I'm working on right now. *head meets brick wall* I have a concept for what I want, but getting her "on the page" has been extraordinarily different. I even threatened to send her back to central casting and start over.... Should I be concerned that I keep coming up with ways to murder her? I mean, she *is* the female lead in an M/F romance.

Can we use tropes to write better, more dimensional, and consistent characters? In the example of Barker & Llewelyn you mention knock-offs and templates. I'd love to hear more about how to get from "start with this template" to "ta-da my unique spin on that template".

One of my writer friends suggested I just sit down and start writing, instead of trying to figure it all out beforehand. I've been incredibly resistant to that idea because I used to be a pantser -- and I have the broken novels which came of that writing style. I think the process I'm following is throwing up caution signs, warning me something's not right, yet. My friend thinks the process itself is the problem. How do I figure out the right path? Or, how do I know when I need to quit being so stubborn?

[…] Characters carry the reader through the tale, so they’d best be compelling. Yen Cabag tells us how to create believable characters, Melissa Bowersock talks naming your character, Janice Hardy asks if you are showing or telling your internalization, Angie Hodapp reminds us that our protagonist must fail, Dustin Grinnell outlines the 3 characteristics of extraordinary heroes, Terry Odell advises us that men are not women with chest hair, and Kristen Lamb shows how story forges and refines character.
Thanks for this, Kristen. Character building is not my strong suit. I'm more into suspense, hooks, etc. so my characters can be flat at times. I appreciate this, and hope you're staying safe.
