Kristen, you constantly confirm my suspicions. Good content sells (with the right kind of exposure). I think I read your blog first time about 8 years ago and I decided on becoming a better communicator by writing a blog. 9 years down the blog road I have come to that place where I believe I could write a saleable book (I needed to learn a lot). The funny part is that I have been a successful sales person throughout life, I just need a book to sell.

Excellent post. I needed that! Overwhelmed at the moment trying to come up with something to boost sales and this made me realize I’m already doing it. Off to finish this week’s blog, which happens to be a 7 part series that includes my favorite Tips, Tricks and Tools for writers. You nailed it again. Thanks for the reminder. I stopped putting effort into ‘marketing’ years ago because I hated it and the effort wasn’t worth it (I only ever broke even on adverts), and I found that so long as I kept engaging with people, my books kept selling anyway. They only stopped selling regularly when I stopped writing new books. I’m editing and publishing other people’s books now, and I love doing that.

I like the way you think. Two of my books are part of a continuing fantasy series about a hero who’s been badly burned (and used to be handsome). Boy, does he have issues! I wonder if there’s some way I could somehow find people who have those issues and would enjoy a hero who does have to cope with those changes in body image and function, and who still manages to have quite a life. Hmm…you’ve got me thinking about this possibility. (also, he came very close to death and can now see ghosts even though he doesn’t really want to, details details…).

TRUTH. The past three weeks have been RIDICULOUSLY stressful. Hubby went in to get a mole removed and found out it was melanoma. We had to rush him in to have it removed and they took a HUGE chunk out of his back (his stitches are the width of my palm and they also cut DEEP). Then, we had to wait on the test results to see if the cancer had gone metastatic. I am from a family of medical people and, the cancer spot being on his back??? All I could think was how close it was to liver, kidneys, his SPINE. Suffice to say, I was a hot mess.

But I downloaded book after book to listen to whenever I wasn’t working and my mind could wander to worry. I read Robert Galbraith’s latest mystery which is a TOME and a crazy complex mystery, but it helped my anxiety. Instead of ruminating on all I couldn’t fix/solve, I could focus on a great story and figuring out ‘WHODUNNIT?.’

Humans are emotional creatures and life, sadly, often doesn’t work out. Good guys lose, bad things happen to good people, evil often takes the day. Fiction gives us a place to remember love, magic, hope, and enjoy worlds where the hero ‘wins.’ This is why I believe if authors will ask, ‘What is my story offering readers? What PROBLEM is it SOLVING?’ the idea of sales becomes easier (especially for the novelist who isn’t writing about how to balance a budget or lose weight).
