Oh I never think of my teaching peers as competition because I am reading craft books and taking craft classes all the time, despite being at this 20 years. I always gain a new insight from a fresh take on the same ideas/techniques.

I like Larry Brooks’ take on it. The character has a psychological (internal conflict) inadequacy or problem he must overcome in order to face the antagonistic force (external conflict). That self-blocking condition comes out of backstory which may or may not appear. Cause and effect connect internally and externally and are intertwined. The MC is often his/her own worst enemy, at first, which gives us cause to root for the MC.
