The usual complaints about "formula" keep missing the point: it's formulaS, and how to combine what each thing does.

A cook knows that cooking beef at a certain speed creates a certain taste, and a writer knows that giving a character a painful memory builds sympathy... but *what else* will they put with it? What other known effects do you mix up, in what order, and what will they do together? Even large-scale formulas like "Save the Cat" are just a framework for fitting other elements onto it (there's more than one way to save a cat, or skin them). Rules are small tools, known effects -- creativity is combining them.

Picasso said, "Learn the rules like a professional, so you can break them like an artist." And even he didn't break these kind of rules; he found entirely new combinations for them.

I have only one rule while writing: I write what I'd like to read. So long a it keeps me entertained then there's at least a chance it'll do the same for my readers. I've been a full-time writer for over 40 years now so it's working for me. :)
As for your art, I've found that working in different mediums (visual arts, music, for me) seems to enhance my writing.

I agree formula is important. It’s the base to build on and make it uniquely your own. Thanks for a great article.

Aloha Kristen! I love your paintings. And when I took drawing courses I saw that beginning art students were making the same mistakes as beginning writers: focusing on the details without learning the principles of good composition. And I agree, everything has structure and if it isn't there your story or your painting will fall apart.
