If you like horror (ghost story), I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED "Old Country" by Matt and Harrison Query. Just discovered that one last month.

A great supernatural (comedy) series is "Tales from the Gas Station" by Jack Townsend.

"The Exorcist" by Blatty is an incredible book and a classic for good reason.

I REALLY loved "Dead Silence" but READ it; don't do audio. The narrator is terrible. It is a science fiction ghost ship story.

"Shutter Island" by Dennis LeHane is a great psychological suspense and better than the movie.

"Heart Shaped Box" by Joe Hill is fabulous (a vengeful ghost hunting an aging rockstar).

"Sallow Bend" by Alan Baxter is good.

"You See the Monster" by Luke Smitherd is FANTASTIC!

"Soon" is a great horror set in Australia and it is by Lois Murphy.

"The Peripheral" by William Gibson is a fantastic science fiction and better than the show.

"Book of Night" by Holly Black is a wonderful occult supernatural.

I think I have officially used all my superlatives, LOL!

I read a lot in occult, horror, supernatural. You didn't mention mystery, thriller or suspense so I have plenty more suggestions. But these are all books I read multiple times because they were so outstanding. Many I bought multiple copies.

I can say the same to you. What genre do you LIKE? I read all over, so maybe I can point you the right way.

1000% this! I read a book recently that was a huge bestseller and couldn't finish it because the characters felt flat and there were blatant examples of not bothering to do simple research to make things believable. The romance also felt contrived to me. Ugh! I will keep dropping in and watching for book recommendations. That said, I've also had some that I have truly loved in recent years, so they are out there, it's just so hard to find them in the quagmire of books being pumped out.

I did the same thing with Jules Verne, Author Conan Doyle, and H.P. Lovecraft. Also read a lot of Asimov but not the whole collection. I am rereading "The Perfect Storm" by Sebastian Junger right now, but that hit huge in the 90s. You are correct 1000%. You can even learn from bad books...though it pisses me off to have my time and money wasted.

I am struggling with modern books. Even stuff out of the big NYC publishers. One book had a gazillion rave reviews and I would have thrown the book across the room...except I read on an iPhone and that's an expensive "book" to break. It was DREADFUL. Word echoes, characters that were too stupid to live, terrible (or no) research. Just absolutely HORRID.

I've thought about doing a day where I recommend books and why I love them. I try to mention good books in my posts, but I know I have barely scratched the surface on all the good finds I have (though sadly, most are not contemporary).

Wow, I missed this post from last January. At the start of my senior year in college, I took fiction writing as an elective. After taking that class, I read fiction and even non fiction with a critical eye. When I breeze through a chapter without pause, I know the writing is competent. When it's not, I find myself rewriting, in my head, clunky or run on sentences. After decades of starts and stops, complete with a collection of outlined novels and partial short stories, I now enjoy writing. If I could travel back in time, I'd approach writing differently, I swear.
