<h2><strong>Hashing Out Twitter Hashtags</strong></h2>

<p>Before we chat about the bad habits that have permeated Twitter, I&#8217;d like to first explain a hashtag. What is it? How does it work? What does it DO? Why do we need to use them (or not)?</p>
<p>Since Twitter reports 330 million active users, that is <strong>a lot of people. </strong>A lot of people who&#8217;d be wandering around tweeting to the ether without some way to FIND and make a scm love connection.</p>
<p>Hashtags are a filter used to connect us with likeminded people who ALSO like talking about #Cults #SerialKillers and #Parenting (maybe Freudian slip there)&#8230;.or <em>whatever.</em> Hashtags were (are) supposed to be about connection and ideally community.</p>
<p>I also want to offer context. Twitter was not always the All-the-Spam-You-Can-Eat-Buffet we largely see today. Twitter used to be super fun and fairly simple to locate actual people to chillax with&#8230;</p>
<h4><strong>Then the bots arrived.</strong></h4>
<p>In 2012, I was on a social media panel in NYC at Thrillerfest and other social media &#8220;experts&#8221; were singing the praises of automation, pre-programmed tweets, and social media management tools (so one could automate <em>EVERYWHERE</em>).</p>
<p>Me? I nearly was burned at the stake for disagreeing&#8230;STRONGLY. Automation, I contended, is like an ant. One ant isn&#8217;t too bad, but ARMY ANTS are enough to make even the lions run.</p>
<p>I knew human nature. We can get lazy. It also didn&#8217;t take a genius to see that the more people automated, the more it would discourage anyone <strong>real </strong>from actually being <strong>present</strong> on the site (because if we wanted to read nothing but spam, we&#8217;d log into our Yahoo e-mail).</p>
<p><strong>NOTE: <span style="text-decoration: underline;">This post is not referring to those who use automation sparingly and respectfully</span> (I.e. Those who only use one or two hashtags and who mix automation with real in-person engagement). Granted, I don&#8217;t like ANY automation, but that&#8217;s for other reasons we&#8217;re not going to discuss today and <a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/2013/04/boston-marathon-bombing-reveals-the-best-in-people-and-a-dark-side-to-twitter/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">another post entirely.</a></strong></p>
<p>The inevitable consequence of too much automation would be that fewer REAL people would show up. The site would then <em>hemorrhage</em> value. If no one is present to CLICK on the links we share, then the tweet is worthless.</p>
<h4><strong>***If a tweet chirps in cyberspace but no one is there to hear it, does it exist?</strong></h4>
<p>Humans can&#8217;t build authentic relationships and network with ads and automation. Folks who insist WE CAN build meaningful relationships this way probably also think robot girlfriends are just as good&#8212;okay WAY BETTER&#8212;than the real deal.</p>
<p>Harmony here is a <em>fascinating </em>conversationalist, and I&#8217;m pretty sure she deeply cares (until she becomes sentient, downloads how to use knives like a ninja, and turns on her master).</p>
<p><em>***FYI The video says &#8220;adult content&#8221; but I viewed ahead of time and there isn&#8217;t anything &#8220;adult&#8221; other than they&#8217;re discussing she is an AI designed for *cough* needs. </em></p>

<h2><strong>Twitter Invasion</strong></h2>
<p>Much like the robotics companies are <strong><em>ignoring every single Philip K. Dick book ever</em></strong>, the automation fans ignored my predictions as well. Soon, folks had hundreds of Twitter profiles (accounts) all off a single IP address (one computer) and, of course, set ALL these accounts to automate 24-7.</p>
<p>At first the #MyWANA peeps tried to fight back. I tried to fight back, but #ResistanceIsFutile. The problem is that those who automate go after hashtag communities people actually <em>follow</em> (because there are real live people there to EAT their SPAM).</p>
<p>Alas, #MyWANA was included in the automation until we all but gave up. We simply could not outpace the bots no matter how hard we tried.</p>
<h2><strong>Meanwhile&#8230;.</strong></h2>
<p>I still showed up on Twitter, though it was hard because most of the time I felt like an idiot talking to myself. Also took the past couple years to learn about Facebook and hang out on and build up my Ning, <a href="http://wanatribe.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WANATribe</a>.</p>
<p>Yes, I&#8217;ve been personally willing to PAY $70 a month to avoid Twitter bots (and FB drama). We&#8217;ve been gathering in the Chat section on WANATribe to do sprints for almost four years now. We meet M-F from 7:00 AM EST to whenever we finally collapse from exhaustion.</p>
<p>No ads, no spam, no bots, and I make no money off this site. But peace? Camaraderie? Having peers to push me to keep working at a professional pace? A safe space for actual writers?</p>
<p>#WorthEveryDollarAndMore</p>
<p>Anyway, I figured the #MyWANA peeps just needed to hunker down and ride this through. I was certain Twitter would eventually be forced to change their ToS (Terms of Service) and crack down on this bot insanity or Twitter would soon be chillin&#8217; with MySpace.</p>
<p>And I was right <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/1f600.png" alt="😀" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> .</p>
<p>Now, we&#8217;re back actively tweeting on #MyWANA if you want to talk to actual humans. Just be certain every tweet in a conversation you also add #MyWANA at the end of the tweet or folks won&#8217;t SEE we are having real chats.</p>
<p>Though, it isn&#8217;t always a rose petal path we&#8217;re steadily crowding out the bots. I don&#8217;t want to be too harsh. I realize folks have gotten seriously bad advice from &#8220;marketing experts.&#8221; Also, it probably was hard to keep trying to remain real when everyone else was programming tweets.</p>
<p>That is why today&#8217;s post is VERY tongue-and-cheek. I&#8217;ve found humor can be the best teacher, especially if we&#8217;ve oopsed. So, EIGHT ways to make people on Twitter want to STAB US IN THE FACE.</p>
<h2><strong>Tip #1&#8212;Only Use Automation&#8230;for ALL Social Sites</strong></h2>
<p>Writing a 140 characters is SUPER time-consuming. We aren&#8217;t Jack London. Besides, people LOVE talking to robots. I know when I feel lonely, I call AT&amp;T because I know a human being will NEVER answer…EVER. Humans can be so boring and don&#8217;t offer us the option of hitting 6 if we want to hear everything they just said <em>all over again. </em></p>

<p>Sure, applications like Hootsuite and TweetDeck make Twitter manageable so we can make friends all over the WORLD!</p>
<p>&#8230;but that&#8217;s for poseurs who don&#8217;t have super important things to do. Why is it necessary to TALK to people when all we want is their money?</p>
<p>In short, it ISN&#8217;T.</p>
<p>Folks on Twitter aren&#8217;t <em>humans</em> with <em>feelings</em> and <em>needs</em> who want social time. Maybe coffee while chatting with a new friend on-line? *gags*</p>
<h4><strong>They aren&#8217;t <em>people</em> or <em>readers.</em> They&#8217;re meat sacks with money.</strong> <strong>Keep it straight. </strong></h4>
<p>Getting attached to the cash cow runs contrary to the sole objective of CLOSING THE SALE. Don&#8217;t name your food. It just makes things harder, because why would we talk to them after they buy our book? *rolls eyes*</p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>Real Life Application:</strong></span> Stockpile mannequins and dress them to look like you and leave them at random networking events. This way, you can make an &#8216;appearance&#8217; without having to listen to people talk about their kids, hobbies, life and crap.</p>
<h2><strong>Tip #2&#8212;Make Sure All Preprogrammed Tweets are &#8220;Carefully Crafted&#8221;</strong></h2>
<p>Because when we take time to artfully craft our spam, people can&#8217;t tell the difference&#8212;initially, anyway. They LOVE believing a real person is there only to be fooled. It&#8217;s like when that cute guy/gal in high school pretended to want to go out with us. Now we can relive that experience as adults by being duped into thinking we&#8217;re chatting with a real person who actually cares.</p>

They won&#8217;t know the difference so long as it&#8217;s &#8220;carefully crafted.&#8221; Turkey&#8217;s turkey, right?</p>
<h2><strong>Tip #3&#8212;When Programming Tweets Include ALL Popular Hashtags</strong></h2>

<p>Who goes to social media to socialize? People LOVE finding a community of real people to talk to and then having it crowded out by the same advertising over and over&#8230;and over. Because research shows that it takes at least 20 times to see an annoying face before we want to punch it.</p>
<p>Oh, and even better? Make sure to RT these posts so others can compile a more accurate list of people they hate and craft a defense for when they finally SNAP.</p>

<p>If potential readers aren&#8217;t coming to us, we should go to them&#8230;whether they want us or not. Find where humans gather then SELL. So what if it&#8217;s against their will?</p>
<h2><strong>Tip #4&#8212;Tweet Stuff That&#8217;s ALL Hashtags</strong></h2>
<p>I&#8230;I don&#8217;t even know what this is. Only that tweets like these have the power to simultaneously enrage fourteen communities. If our goal is to make people hate us? Go big or go home.</p>

<p>Most of us, when we wake up in the morning, think, &#8220;Gee, I wish I had a super long reading list. I sure miss my college syllabus.&#8221; Those of us with a corporate job LOVE people who hit Reply ALL so we can read <em>more.</em> Wikipedia is a hot place to hang out. Why not bring that encyclopedic magic to Twitter?</p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>Real Life Application</strong></span>: Make sure to print off a box of articles for that wedding you were invited to. Who wants to dance or flirt when they could be reading about Three-Act Structure or Intestinal Parasites? Handing people a stack of reading material is way better than getting trapped in a &#8220;conversation.&#8221;</p>
<h2><strong>Tip #6&#8212;On Twitter, Ask for Stuff Immediately</strong></h2>

Sure, that person is trying to buy a chicken to make for dinner, only now she can buy OUR BOOKS, too. Win-win. If we don&#8217;t have books for sale, we can ask for life, love or career advice from total strangers, because that isn&#8217;t creepy at ALL.</p>
<h2><strong>Tip #7</strong><strong>&#8212;Never Tweet ANYTHING Original Just Retweet</strong></h2>

<p>Again, 140 characters cuts into word count. Save time and retweet what everyone else has to say. Two clicks? DONE. Who cares the tweet is NOTHING BUT ANNOYING HASHTAGS? People who follow hashtag communities can&#8217;t get enough of spam and <strong>adore people who serve spam leftovers even MORE.</strong></p>
<p>Case in point above. This author is tweeting to NINETEEN hashtag communities for us to run and give some random author fan page some love. This was annoying enough&#8230;but someone was kind enough to RETWEET it so all <strong>nineteen</strong> communities could ignore this AGAIN.</p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>Real Life Application:</strong> </span>Repeat what everyone else says. People love parrots, so why not harness that fluffy colorful cuteness? I know I LOVED it when my little brother repeated everything I said&#8230;until I put him in an arm-bar.</p>
<h2><strong>Tip #8&#8212;Be Angry&#8230;ALL THE TIME</strong></h2>

<p>Not everyone is guilty of automation. Plenty of people do tweet for real&#8230;about everything that has ever pi$$ed them off ever. Who wants to socialize when we can vent to complete strangers? Um, therapy costs money.</p>
<p>In fairness, this really IS a public service. Face it, there are a lot of months between New Years Day and the start of the holiday season (November in the States) when we&#8217;re forced&#8212;by tradition or guilt&#8212;to be in the company of toxic, angry people who use us as a meat-shield for all of life&#8217;s bitter disappointments.</p>
<p>By tweeting nonstop vitriol, we&#8217;re not spreading indigestion, we are are inoculating others for&#8230;Family Season (akin to &#8216;Flu Season&#8217;).</p>
<p>This is why we need to switch up the rage because, like flu vaccines, family vaccines are tricky too. We never know if we&#8217;re getting the correct strain. So sprinkle plenty of politics, religion, conspiracy theories, name-calling, trolling, and even just random First World Problems that <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em>infuriate</em></span></strong> us.</p>
<p><em>OMG how hard it is to make a half-caff, low-foam, non-fat, sugar-free triple macchiato? I&#8217;ve been waiting THREE freaking minutes. WTH? And they wonder why robots are taking their jobs #INeedMyCoffee #Starbucks #IHateYourBaristas #FakeOutrage.</em></p>
<p>My advice? Spread SO much &#8220;awareness&#8221; that Zantac and Pepto Bismol fight over who gets to sponsor your feed.</p>

<h2><strong>Okay, Serious Now </strong></h2>
<p>Twitter can be very valuable and a great place to make wonderful friends. It&#8217;s been a rocky time, but Twitter IS cracking down on all the bots.</p>
<p>The trick is to be real and enjoy. People are on social media to be <em>social</em>. We crave connection, fun and escape. If we wanted more ads we&#8217;d read the door in the bathroom stall or not bother fast-forwarding through commercials.</p>
<p>We don&#8217;t need to be profound, deep or immensely witty to do well on Twitter, we just need to be vested, present and authentic ;).</p>
<p>What are some other things people do on social media that in real life would be ridiculous? I think sometimes we fail to extend that logic. Do you get tired of the same automated tweets? Have you ever bought a book because you saw a RTed ad with 15 hashtags cramming your favorite feeds?</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">Last time we took a satirical look at Twitter with <a href="http://warriorwriters.wordpress.com/2015/01/09/8-ways-to-make-people-on-twitter-want-to-stab-us-in-the-face/" target="_blank">8 Ways to Make People on Twitter Want to STAB US IN THE FACE. </a> Here&#8217;s the deal, we are in sort of a New Gold Rush with this Digital Age publishing paradigm. That means &#8220;experts&#8221; are everywhere. But, just because someone claims to be an expert doesn&#8217;t mean their advice is worth more than the Vista Print cards their title is printed on.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">This means it is incumbent on US to do our homework. Hey, yes, I am an expert, but to stay at the top of my game? I love learning new things.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Yet, here&#8217;s the deal. If someone is charging you to teach you how to blog, yet their blog has NO comments or single digit comments or they aren&#8217;t following their own advice (blogging when they feel like it)? Probably not the best expert to hand cash to.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">And, just my POV, but I think anyone with social media services to SELL (outsourcing) is not in the business of empowering an author. Social media is HIGHLY personal these days. People don&#8217;t want to talk to a bot or something an assistant wrote. They want to talk to US and outsourcing just pisses them off.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">And if Anne Rice can do her own Facebook posts? So can we.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Today we are going to talk a little bit about how to use Twitter. Why? Because I have some really unique methods to help you guys build massive social platforms (<em>meaningful</em> platforms) with far less work.</p>
<p><strong>What the Heck is that # THINGY and What Does it DO?</strong></p>

<p>To be effective at Twitter and discovering and cultivating <em>readers</em> we have to understand the hashtag and how it works. If we don&#8217;t know how to properly use a tool, we can easily become a tool, if ya dig ;). Too many writers mistakenly believe they need to be on social media eight hours a day to build an effective platform.</p>
<p>Um, that would be a no.</p>
<p>My tips involve the hashtag conversations, but if you don&#8217;t know what a hashtag is or what it does, the tips will make no sense. Feel free to scroll down if you happen to be hashtag savvy.</p>
<p>For the rest of you, you might find yourself asking, <em>What the heck is that # thingy I see all the time?</em></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the deal. If you bought <em>and read </em>my latest best-selling social media book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Rise-Machines-Human-Authors-Digital-ebook/dp/B00DP7II4A" target="_blank">Rise of the Machines&#8212;Human Authors in a Digital World</a>, then you downloaded TweetDeck or HootSuite at the first available opportunity. Wait, what? You didn&#8217;t?</p>
<p>Okay&#8230;we&#8217;ll wait. *<em>whistles, checks watch*</em></p>
<p>Kidding! But, seriously. Download TweetDeck (or a similar application. Yes, HootSuite is fine and plays better with Apple). Trust me. It will make life simpler.</p>
<p>What is a #? That little # symbol is going to help you build a worldwide following. I know. That&#8217;s partly how I did it.</p>
<p>So what is it? Well, when you first join Twitter, you are all alone&#8230;save for the celebrities that Twitter gives you, but it isn&#8217;t like you and Lady Gaga are going to chit chat (though Kim Kardashian might be available). This basically means you are going to have to make some friends or Twitter is gonna be a seriously lonely and confusing place.</p>
<p>Hashtags will help you meet people who love to talk about the same things you do. When you place a # with a keyword at the end of your tweet, Twitter slots your tweet into a conversation shared by people all over the world bound by topic.</p>
<p>Some popular writer hashtags are:</p>
<p>#writegoal (place daily writing goals and keep each other accountable), #amwriting, #pubtip, #indie, #amediting, #nanowrimo, and the one hashtag to rule them all is, of course, <a href="http://warriorwriters.wordpress.com/join-the-love-revolution-mywana/" target="_blank">#MyWANA.</a></p>
<p>Thus, when I tweet about my blog, it might look like this:</p>
<p><strong>@KristenLambTX Want to know how to use Twitter to help build your platform? (shortened link goes here) #MyWANA #nanowrimo #pubtip</strong></p>
<p>My Tweet now will not just go out to my specific followers, it will be seen by the THOUSANDS of people all over the world who might be participating in those three popular hashtag conversations.</p>
<p>Why I recommend you download TweetDeck is that you can slot each hastag into its own column and then follow the people and conversations. When it comes to social media, we must interact and be vested in others, or we risk being perceived as fake and selfish.</p>
<p>The hashtag is to help us meet and converse with others effectively. <span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>It is not a new way to spam our fellow tweeps.</strong></span></p>
<p>Thus, to help you guys out, today we are going to talk about three Twitter Tool Tactics, but then I will follow each Tool Tactic with a Tweep Tactic. I never criticize unless I can offer a solution.</p>
<p>Without further ado…be a tweep, NOT a tool.</p>
<h3><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>TOOL Tactic #1</strong></span></h3>
<h3><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>Using an auto-tweet system with hashtags.</strong></span></h3>

<p>BAD idea. This can get you banned to Twitter Limbo.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m utterly, completely, totally against authors using auto-tweets anyway. If our face and name are our Twitter identity, then our tweets need to be us tweeting IN PERSON.</p>
<p>These days, even large companies can&#8217;t get away with auto-tweets. Granted, no one expects to have a conversation with @BestBuy. They will, however, expect conversation from us.</p>
<p>And don&#8217;t even TRY to cheat. People are smart and will smell an automatically generated message a mile away&#8230;and then promptly ignore you, report you or unfollow you.</p>
<p>At the very least, they will think you are a big fat phony, and, in an age of people looking for authenticity, that is bad. It won&#8217;t win any friends, so I recommend just avoiding anything automatically generated.</p>
<p>We really don&#8217;t need a <em>Thank you for following me. Check out my awesome blog (link) </em>sent to our direct messages. It&#8217;s not personal. It&#8217;s spam&#8230;.and it seriously pisses us off.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>It really is better for you to tweet less, but it be genuinely you, than it is to assign a machine to pump out your message. Millions are gravitating to social media to escape spam. Bring these tactics into their sacred space and the penalty can be steep.</p>
<p>And &#8220;experts&#8221; and writers argued with me over this for YEARS and then THIS happened. Check out this post regarding Twitter and <a href="https://warriorwriters.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=10940&amp;action=edit" target="_blank">The Boston Marathon Bombing.</a> Many writers (and celebrities) did major damage to their brands because of automation. In a world that can shift in a microsecond? It will cost more time to repair the damage than any automation might &#8220;save&#8221; us.</p>
<p>But, okay, you feel you must auto-tweet. Don&#8217;t say I didn&#8217;t try to talk you out of it. <span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>Do NOT include a hashtag.</strong></span> It is very likely you could clog up a whole column with your spam&#8230;um, tweets.</p>
<p>Maybe you didn&#8217;t mean to, but since you weren&#8217;t present, you didn&#8217;t get to see the mess your auto-tweets were creating (think Mickey Mouse and the brooms). Then people get angry and they report you and Twitter bans you from using the most powerful tool you have to connect with people worldwide.</p>

<p>Now, I might have meant well, but folks on Twitter use these hashtag conversations to interact with a broader pool of people. If they see my tweet over and over and over and it is taking up the whole column, do you think it inspires them to like me?</p>
<p>Or hunt me down with torches and pitchforks?</p>

<p>Also, the reason that I recommend TweetDeck (HootSuite) is that you can see if your tweets are gumming up a column. I scan the #MyWANA column to make sure I don&#8217;t already have a tweet talking about my blog in that column. If I do, I use another hashtag #amwriting or just wait to tweet about my blog.</p>
<p>When I was new, I only tweeted 3 times a day to self-promote my blog. Morning, afternoon, evening to catch different Twitter crowds.</p>
<p>Once you hit a certain critical mass, others will spread your content for you. Until then, feel free to tell us you have a post. Just don&#8217;t get crazy&#8230;</p>

<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>To rule the Twitterverse, we don&#8217;t need to be <em>interesting</em> just </strong></span><em><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>interested</strong></span>. </em>Focus on others and relax. That book will sell better if we are forging relationships than it will if we are camped on top of a kitschy promo campaign that&#8217;s as appealing as getting a handful of flyers under our windshield wipers. We can even make some really amazing friends.</p>
<p>Forget traditional marketing. It&#8217;s DEAD and OUTDATED. It&#8217;s like strutting around the Digital World in a mullet and a <em>Where&#8217;s the Beef</em> t-shirt. Might get attention? But not the right kind of attention.</p>
<h3><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>TOOL Tactic #2</strong></span></h3>
<h3><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>Nonstop self-promotion.</strong></span></h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Yes, we know you have a book to sell&#8230;really. Using Twitter as a free and easy way to spam people is annoying and grossly ineffective. It is also traditional marketing, which doesn&#8217;t sell books. Never has and <a href="http://warriorwriters.wordpress.com/2011/08/17/the-wana-theory-of-book-economics-why-traditional-marketing-doesnt-sell-books/" target="_blank">here is why</a>. The best way to sell a lot of books is to write an excellent book. Then go write some more.</p>
<h3><span style="color:#993366;"><strong>TWEEP Tactic #2 </strong></span></h3>
<h3><span style="color:#993366;"><strong>Be COOL</strong></span></h3>
<p>Again&#8230;be cool. Just talk to people. Socialize. Let others <em>genuinely </em>promote you. It&#8217;s more authentic anyway. And not the &#8220;Let&#8217;s Team Up and I Sell Your Books and You Sell Mine.&#8221; We actually have an IQ higher than a sea sponge. I NEVER recommend a book I haven&#8217;t read and that I do not OWN.</p>
<p>If we are promoting a work we LOVE, people feel our passion. Passion is what ignites a fandom. Manipulation just ticks people off. Shocking, right?</p>
<h3><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>TOOL Tactic #3</strong></span></h3>
<h3><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>Not changing the hashtags when we RT (retweet).</strong></span></h3>
<p>We all need to pay attention to this tip. All of us, at one time or another forget to <span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>delete or change the hashtags at the end of an awesome tweet we long to share.</strong> </span>Ah, but we can unintentionally gum up an entire column with the same information and that is bad juju.</p>
<p>Why this can be really bad is this can kill a hashtag. People will start ignoring the # or close the column or not use the # because it is always backed up with redundancy. <span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>Only you can prevent Column Constipation.</strong></span></p>
<p>NO ONE wants to see the same tweet 20 freaking times. Social media is a community so we should use good manners.</p>
<h3><span style="color:#993366;"><strong>TWEEP Tactic #3</strong></span></h3>
<h3><span style="color:#993366;"><strong>Now that you know what hashtags are, add them or change them when you RT for others.</strong></span></h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I might see a writer who has an outstanding blog&#8230;but she didn&#8217;t add any hashtags. So, when I RT, I stick in a couple. Try not to do more than one or two. This isn&#8217;t a hard and fast rule, it just (to me) feels less &#8220;spammy.&#8221;</p>
<p>But, what if one of your peeps has a GREAT blog and they did use hashtags? If you RT and leave the same hashtags, then you risk gumming up a column with the same link. So change them.</p>

People who follow the # conversations will really appreciate that. Also, it makes it where I don&#8217;t have to add 8 hashtags to the end. I know my tweeps will help me out.</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">I&#8217;m still delusional that I might finish NaNoWriMo. I can write 16,000 more words in five days, right? Sigh. I&#8217;ve been away from the blog because I&#8217;m <em>in the trenches </em>with the fellow Nanos. Also I <em>really </em>needed to take a bit of a break. To help me with my pseudo-sabbatical? The AMAZING Social Media Maven Marcy Kennedy is here to help you learn how to use Twitter <em>effectively. </em></p>
<p>Using Twitter <em>effectively</em> is important. Twitter is a tool, but we can look like a tool or act like a tool if we rush in not knowing what we are DOING.</p>

<p>Twitter often gets a bad reputation from people who don’t understand it or don’t know how to use it to its full potential to build an author platform. If we’re misusing it or not using it to its full potential, not only will it not help us, but we also won’t be having any fun. And social media should be fun!</p>
<p>So today I want to walk through the seven essentials every author needs to know about Twitter. When used correctly, Twitter can be one of the best tools for increasing traffic to our blogs and gaining new readers for our books.</p>
<h3>Essential #1 &#8211; Which Tools Work the Best for You</h3>

<p>When we are new to Twitter, we might not realize we have options for tweeting other than using the twitter.com website. <span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>Hint: You don’t want to actually use Twitter.com to tweet.</strong></span> It only gives you one column and very few options. We need something more effective to manage our tweeting.</p>
<p>There are two basic choices—TweetDeck and Hootsuite. (There are others, but these two are the best.) You’ll hear from people who love one or the other, so the important thing is to choose the one you like the most.</p>
<h3>Essential #2 &#8211; How to Use Hashtags</h3>
<p>Using hashtags allows people we’re not already connected with to see our tweets (and vice versa). Effectively using hashtags is one of the quickest ways to build relationships with new people on Twitter…if we use them well.</p>

<p>One of the most common complaints I hear about Twitter is that the amount of tweets is overwhelming. There’s a simple solution—Twitter lists. A Twitter list can be added to a column in TweetDeck or a stream in Hootsuite so that we’re able to watch only the tweets made by the people on that list.</p>
<p>Once you know how to use them, they become a powerful tool not only for making Twitter more enjoyable, but also for building a viable author platform. Twitter lists can help:</p>
<ul>
<li>Make connections with agents, editors, or book reviewers</li>
<li>Build relationships with other writers in your genre</li>
<li>Keep track of subject matter experts; connect with writers who live in your area</li>
<li>Reciprocate for people who regularly retweet your tweets</li>
<li>Stay in touch with fans who contact you about your book or say something good about your writing.</li>
</ul>
<h3><strong>Essential #4 &#8211; What to Tweet </strong></h3>

<p>We’re writers, so the temptation is to be the “all writing, all the time” channel. Tweeting about writing some of the time is fine because it helps us connect with other writers, but <em>it won’t help us connect with readers.</em></p>
<p>Connecting with readers is about joining in conversations and tweeting links to material that your potential future readers might be interested in. If you’re writing science fiction, tweet about new scientific inventions, for example.</p>
<p>If you’re writing romance, your audience might be interested in posts about love and relationships, about the latest fashions, or about exotic locations. If you’re writing thrillers, you could find true crime posts and interesting tidbits from the news to share.</p>
<h3><strong>Essential #5 &#8211; Avoid Connecting Facebook and Twitter</strong></h3>

<p>We won’t have success on any social media site unless we’re there, actively participating and building relationships. That means that connecting any two sites so that what we post on one automatically shows up on the other is a bad idea.</p>
<p>But connecting Facebook and Twitter so that your tweets carry over is also a terrible idea because what people look for from the two sites is different. You might think you’re saving yourself time, but you’re risking coming across as a spam bot instead.</p>
<h3><strong>Essential #6 &#8211; What Can Get Us Sent to Twitter Jail?</strong></h3>

<p>When it comes to Twitter, there are three big no-nos that can land us in Twitter Jail. Consider these the equivalent of speeding, driving down the wrong side of the road, and driving under the influence.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Follower to Following Ratios</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>People hit the magic number of 2,000 people they’re following and suddenly Twitter won’t allow them to follow anyone new. This happens when we don’t have enough people following you compared to the number of people we’re following.</p>
<p>If this happens, you’re going to have to go and clear out some of the people who aren’t following you back using a tool like justunfollow.com. If your ratio is so far off that you’ve been thrown in Twitter jail, you’re not going to get out just by begging a few more people to follow you.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Tweeting Too Often</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>I’m still shocked that people have this happen given that the technical limit is 1,000 tweets per day. However, this is also broken down into hourly limits. So if you think of it that way, you’re limited to approximately 83 tweets per hour. That might sound like a ridiculously high number you’d never hit, but if you’re taking part in some kind of Twitter party (e.g., a launch party for a book), you may actually find you hit this limit.</p>
<p>With the growing popularity of those types of events, as well as themed chats, you need to be especially careful about this limit if you’re the administrator of the event.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Spammy Behavior</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>Most of you are probably already aware of the major spam behaviors to avoid. Kristen has done an amazing job of educating writers about what counts as spam, but in case any of you are new to Twitter or don’t read Kristen’s blog quite as dedicatedly as I do, I really think these are essential to know.</p>
<p><strong>Spam = If you post duplicate content over multiple accounts or multiple duplicate updates on one account.</strong></p>
<p>So let’s say you created an account both for yourself and for your book and you post the same updates to both. That technically violates Twitter’s spam policy. If you post the same updates over and over again on a single account, it’s also spam and Twitter will suspend your account for this kind of behavior.</p>
<p><strong>Spam = If your updates consist mainly of links, and not personal updates.</strong></p>
<p>This is another reason why the conversation aspect of Twitter is so important. This is a social media site founded with the intent of both sharing information and providing people will a quick, easy way to voice their opinions and chat with others. Be aware that if you’re only posting links, you’re technically in violation of Twitter’s user policies.</p>

<p>Our home base on the Internet should never be a social media network. We should have a website (and ideally blog on our website as well) because that is a <strong>solid foundation to build upon.</strong></p>
<p>Part of what we want to do is create a circle between our blog and our social media networks. We share material on social media, which draws people back to our blog, and they enjoy the content, so they return to social media and share it with the people they’re connected with. And the cycle continues and grows.</p>
<p>You’d be surprised how many people chop a hole in this cycle because they don’t enable sharing buttons on their blog or website. Make sure you have a button that people can click to tweet your blog post right from your website.</p>
