<p>Last post was some tongue-and-cheek fun pointing out how brands (particularly author brands) abuse Twitter. Today, I want to shift gears and chat some about how writers&#8212;actually ALL brands&#8212;can use Twitter far more <strong>effectively.</strong></p>
<p>Currently, too many writers are like Stormtroopers&#8212;lots of<del> shots fired </del> tweets that hit NOTHING.</p>
<p>Admittedly, when I got on Twitter (practically when it was <em>invented)</em> I didn&#8217;t get it. I would<em>&#8212;KID YOU NOT&#8212;</em>freak out when people I didn&#8217;t know followed me.</p>
<p><em>WHAT? Are you, like, a stalker</em>?</p>
<p>Yes, I was missing the ENTIRE point of Twitter. Hey, we all start somewhere.</p>
<p>Do you have to do Twitter? No. No one will take you to writer jail because you didn&#8217;t sign up. Is it <em>wise</em> to use Twitter? Meh, for the past couple years. Er, not so much.</p>
<p>Was sort of a personal choice if one was willing to be persistent and cull through bots to find gems. I stuck with it namely because I figured Twitter eventually would remedy the problems that were hobbling this once extremely effective social platform.</p>
<p>Now that Twitter&#8217;s going all Old Testament on bots and excessive automation? ABSOLUTELY a great idea to be on Twitter.</p>
<h2><strong>Twitter &amp; Going Viral</strong></h2>
<div id="attachment_25251" style="width: 496px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-25251" class="wp-image-25251" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.26.13-PM.png" alt="Kristen Lamb, social media for writers, building a brand with social media, building a brand using Twitter, how to use Twitter, Twitter for writers, Twitter and brands, How to Go Viral, finding readers" width="496" height="264" srcset="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.26.13-PM.png 686w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.26.13-PM-200x106.png 200w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.26.13-PM-300x160.png 300w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.26.13-PM-600x319.png 600w" sizes="(max-width: 496px) 100vw, 496px" /><p id="caption-attachment-25251" class="wp-caption-text">Pros and cons to rampant replication.</p></div>
<p>First, I want to make something clear. We cannot <em>make something (content) go viral. </em>Going viral is something that will happen all on its own and we have almost no control regarding what content will catch fire and what will simply wink out.</p>
<p>We CAN, however, position our content in optimal environments for <em>going viral </em>(part of what I teach in my upcoming branding class, <a href="https://wanaintl.com/event-registration/?ee=639" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BRAND BOSS</a>).</p>
<p>Though going viral can possibly be a mixed blessing, it also happens to be one of the best ways for a brand to grow exponentially and overnight (which is why we want to go viral for <strong>good</strong> things, FYI).</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-25252 " src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.41.44-PM.png" alt="Kristen Lamb, social media for writers, building a brand with social media, building a brand using Twitter, how to use Twitter, Twitter for writers, Twitter and brands, How to Go Viral, finding readers" width="556" height="326" srcset="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.41.44-PM.png 698w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.41.44-PM-200x117.png 200w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.41.44-PM-300x176.png 300w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.41.44-PM-683x400.png 683w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.41.44-PM-600x352.png 600w" sizes="(max-width: 556px) 100vw, 556px" /></p>
<p>The first time I had a blog go viral I thought I&#8217;d broken WP and was upset. I didn&#8217;t realize my graph looked like my blog had a heart attack and DIED because I went from my average of 50 visits a day to 24,000 in ONE day. This is called working smarter, not harder and why linear growth bites in comparison to logarithmic growth.</p>
<h2><strong>Twitter and Viral Environments</strong></h2>
<p>Much like the flu virus will spread way faster in a preschool than in the clean rooms of the CDC&#8230;environment matters. Viruses on-line and in life require optimal conditions to spread.</p>
<p>Truth is, we will rarely go viral from Facebook because the nature of Facebook is more intimate and the platform moves much slower. People are less likely to discover us/our work from Facebook than they are Twitter.</p>
<p>This is why I encourage authors to blog and to blog off their author WEBSITE. Someone sees a tweet for a post that looks interesting and click and enjoy the post and guess what is in the sidebar for sale? BOOKS.</p>
<p>This is a non-invasive way to cultivate readers and sell books. We have a post, serve, engage and entertain. Not doing the:</p>
<p><em>Hi, I&#8217;m a writer. BUY MY BOOK! BUY MY BOOK! BUY MY BOOK! I can&#8217;t feed my family unless you BUY MY BOOK!</em></p>
<h3><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>Show don&#8217;t sell.</strong></span></h3>
<p>Our blog gives potential readers a glimpse of who we are. They sample our writing voice and see we are <em>professionals</em> since we post more than every harvest moon. We have taken time to engage without <em>asking for money. </em>Twitter is the road sign guiding people to the rest stop of their choosing.</p>
<p>Enough people like a certain rest stop? That is when we go viral.</p>
<p>Going viral is AWESOME. Trust me, when you see THIS on the bottom of a post? GREAT FEELING.</p>
<p><a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/screen-shot-2015-01-14-at-7-41-58-am.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-16644" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/screen-shot-2015-01-14-at-7-41-58-am.png" alt="Screen Shot 2015-01-14 at 7.41.58 AM" width="231" height="48" /></a></p>
<p>And yes, there are a lot of shares on Facebook, but many folks <em>discovered</em> the posts on Twitter then chose to share with their more intimate community on Facebook.</p>
<p>My post <a href="https://warriorwriters.wordpress.com/2014/01/02/brave-new-bullying-goodreads-gangs-amazon-attacks-what-are-writers-to-do/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Brave New Bullying and Amazon Attacks</a><strong> </strong>has 338 comments and still climbing. And I say this VERY humbly because <strong>all I do is my job</strong>. But, it is not uncommon for this blog to have triple-digit comments. Twitter is a BIG reason for that. And I&#8217;ve been blessed to go viral many times and not always for writing or social media posts. I blog about everything.</p>
<p>I STILL have people arguing over <a href="https://warriorwriters.wordpress.com/2011/06/13/what-went-wrong-with-the-star-wars-prequels/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">What Went Wrong With the Star Wars Prequels</a> even though I posted it years ago. Up to 304 FABULOUS comments. Very well-thought out. Some <em>thousands </em>of words long.</p>
<h2><strong>Cultivating Customers (Code for &#8220;Readers&#8221;)</strong></h2>
<div id="attachment_11944" style="width: 574px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/magic.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-11944" class="wp-image-11944" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/magic.jpg" alt="Kristen Lamb, social media for writers, building a brand with social media, building a brand using Twitter, how to use Twitter, Twitter for writers, Twitter and brands, How to Go Viral, finding readers" width="574" height="423" srcset="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/magic.jpg 698w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/magic-600x443.jpg 600w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/magic-300x221.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 574px) 100vw, 574px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-11944" class="wp-caption-text">Original image via Flickr Creative Commons courtesy of Sodanie Chea</p></div>
<p>There is one bone-headed statement that makes my head hurt. And I have heard it from all levels of writers from noobs to NTYBSAs. In fact, years ago a BIG NAME author said, &#8220;I don&#8217;t like Twitter. Only writers are on Twitter.&#8221;</p>
<p>*head desk*</p>
<p>I replied, &#8220;There are over 280 <em>MILLION</em> active Twitter users. They&#8217;re all writers. Really?&#8221;</p>
<p>What I then pointed out was that this author tweeted writing quotes, talked about writing, blogged about writing. It was the All-Writing-All-the-Time Channel.</p>
<h4><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>If my goal is to catch a lion, but I bait the traps with peanut butter, who is the fool for griping about catching mice?</strong></span></h4>
<p>Many of us are writers because we were interested in SO many things, writing was the only way we could do them all. When I was a kid, I wanted to be an archaeologist-medical examiner-ballerina-oceanographer-ninja-Navy SEAL. I&#8217;d imagine most of you had similar career plans at age 7.</p>
<p>We <em>became </em>writers because we have an insatiable love for so many things. And we have unique eyes and an imagination to bring those worlds to life. We breathe life into variations of 26 letters in various combinations to create entirely NEW worlds and characters SO real they make a bigger impact on lives than a lot of living, breathing humans.</p>
<p>Yes, we have a God complex.</p>
<p>Thus, when using Twitter, I DO recommend #MyWANA, #amwriting, etc. We NEED a group of professional peers. <strong>But never mistake your colleagues for your audience.</strong> Too many writers are all talking to each other, selling the same people who already have more books than they could finish in a lifetime. We are worn out.</p>
<h2><strong>Twitter Access</strong></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-25257" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.10.23-PM.png" alt="Kristen Lamb, social media for writers, building a brand with social media, building a brand using Twitter, how to use Twitter, Twitter for writers, Twitter and brands, How to Go Viral, finding readers" width="571" height="377" srcset="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.10.23-PM.png 965w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.10.23-PM-200x132.png 200w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.10.23-PM-300x198.png 300w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.10.23-PM-768x507.png 768w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.10.23-PM-800x528.png 800w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.10.23-PM-606x400.png 606w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.10.23-PM-600x396.png 600w" sizes="(max-width: 571px) 100vw, 571px" /></p>
<p>In my branding book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Rise-Machines-Human-Authors-Digital-ebook/dp/B00DP7II4A/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Rise of the Machines&#8212;Human Authors in a Digital World</em></a> I go into far more detail, but here&#8217;s the highlight reel. What do you write? Who is the most likely person (who is NOT an avid reader who will read anything) to read your book?</p>
<p>If I write military thrillers, might be a good idea to follow the military hashtags&#8212;#USMC, #Army, #Navy, #USAF. Make friends, talk to people. Maybe even ask for advice. Admit you&#8217;re a writer and you want to nail the details. Humans are a super-helpful bunch.</p>
<p>Many channels (#DiscoveryID), publications (#PopularMechanics), organizations (#NASA), and shows (#AHS <em>American Horror Story</em>) have created hashtags to encourage those who possess shared interests a place to chat and connect. If I <em>write</em> horror, why would I spend all my time posting on #amwriting #reader #amreading?</p>
<p>That is lazy thinking, devoid of any creativity.</p>
<p>I find it funny that we writers have the capacity to dream up parallel universes, new forms of magic, unknown technology and yet, when we get on social media? #writers, #books #readers is the best we can come up with. SMH (*shaking my head*).</p>
<p>This is a huge reason why writers misusing Twitter and abusing automation vexes me so much. Twitter is probably THE MOST effective way to locate our potential readers <em>globally</em>, talk to them, and eventually cultivate a relationship that will hopefully a) create a reader fan and even b) ignite a passion and enthusiasm for our brand (books) that will spread to <strong>that person&#8217;s network.</strong></p>
<h3><strong>Effective social media works logarithmically.</strong></h3>
<p>If we&#8217;re working linearly, that is a long, hard way to be effective. Feel free to add one person at a time to a mailing list, but remember your competition is working exponentially by cultivating relationships.</p>
<p>Twitter DOES have the capacity to help us go viral, but it is still an investment daily of US. I have a little over 15,500 followers. Other authors SMOKE me on number of followers. But I&#8217;d rather have 500 VESTED and passionate fans than 300,000 &#8216;followers&#8217; who could care less what I have to say.</p>
<h2><strong>Not ALL Sales are Direct</strong></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-25258" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.12.19-PM.png" alt="Kristen Lamb, social media for writers, building a brand with social media, building a brand using Twitter, how to use Twitter, Twitter for writers, Twitter and brands, How to Go Viral, finding readers" width="647" height="314" srcset="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.12.19-PM.png 976w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.12.19-PM-200x97.png 200w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.12.19-PM-300x145.png 300w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.12.19-PM-768x372.png 768w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.12.19-PM-800x388.png 800w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.12.19-PM-825x400.png 825w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.12.19-PM-600x291.png 600w" sizes="(max-width: 647px) 100vw, 647px" /></p>
<p>Actually most sales aren&#8217;t direct.</p>
<p>When we take time to be human and talk to people <strong>without an agenda</strong>, they appreciate it. In fact, as technology improves and becomes more ingrained in our lives, it&#8217;s getting harder and harder to find anything (or anyone) authentic.</p>
<p>Much of what we see/experience on-line is crafted, automated, filtered and fake. We&#8217;re lonely and hop on line to chat, only to find ourselves rooked into chatting with an automated message posing a a real person talking&#8230;which feels awesome never.</p>
<p>So two ways to look at this. Some see all this phony baloney as a problem, a barrier. ME? I see ALL opportunity! The more OTHERS get lazy and rely on automation, gimmicks, and faux drama, the more <strong>appealing authenticity becomes.</strong> Being present, vested and real gains value day by day by day. #Preach</p>
<p>The secret to success in business, branding, writing, etc. is always to look at what OTHERS are NOT doing. Copying what is already supersaturated is comfortable because when it doesn&#8217;t work we can fall back on the <em>Well, everyone else was doing it so it seemed the right thing to do.</em></p>
<p>Stepping out to do what NO ONE else is doing (or few are doing) THAT is the area where the magic can happen.</p>
<h2><strong>Twitter Magic</strong></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-25259" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.13.33-PM.png" alt="Kristen Lamb, social media for writers, building a brand with social media, building a brand using Twitter, how to use Twitter, Twitter for writers, Twitter and brands, How to Go Viral, finding readers" width="583" height="417" srcset="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.13.33-PM.png 659w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.13.33-PM-200x143.png 200w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.13.33-PM-300x215.png 300w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.13.33-PM-558x400.png 558w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-1.13.33-PM-600x430.png 600w" sizes="(max-width: 583px) 100vw, 583px" /></p>
<p>This said, if everyone is automating because that is what all the &#8216;experts&#8217; preach and promote? Do the opposite. <strong>You be you and be real</strong> (pretty much good advice for everything). THIS is how we stand apart.</p>
<p>When we&#8217;re real and talk to others (with no agenda other than chatting like we did in the olden days), it&#8217;s good for us. We&#8217;re forced to think about someone other than ourselves and what WE want. It&#8217;s great training in learning to listen, and pushes us to be a bit vulnerable.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 1.4em;">It&#8217;s also good for our souls since most of us feel icky simply talking to people so they will BUY something. Conversely most people these days have almost no trust for others and have their guard up waiting for some sign we&#8217;re actually being a faker who wants to sell something. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 1.4em;">Especially on Twitter.</span></p>
<p>If we focus on just being cool, those walls come down. We make a friend, others have someone cool to chat with on a break at work and <em>eventually</em> (sure) they realize we have a book or books for sale.</p>
<h2><strong>Power of Word-of-Mouth</strong></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-25254" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.58.45-PM.png" alt="Kristen Lamb, social media for writers, building a brand with social media, building a brand using Twitter, how to use Twitter, Twitter for writers, Twitter and brands, How to Go Viral, finding readers" width="570" height="368" srcset="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.58.45-PM.png 962w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.58.45-PM-200x129.png 200w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.58.45-PM-300x194.png 300w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.58.45-PM-768x496.png 768w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.58.45-PM-800x516.png 800w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.58.45-PM-620x400.png 620w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-17-at-12.58.45-PM-600x387.png 600w" sizes="(max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px" /></p>
<p>If 95% of all we talk about on Twitter (or elsewhere on social media) has nothing to do with selling stuff, no one is going to mind us mentioning a book (And if they do get p!$$ed off? They&#8217;re touchy so let &#8217;em go).</p>
<p>Though this can&#8217;t be our conscious objective (because people will sniff this out as being phony because it is), remember we may not be selling a book to the person(s) we&#8217;re directly talking to. This is why we should talk to anyone who wants to have a cool and respectful conversation.</p>
<p>Maybe they don&#8217;t like our genre. This is NOT where we move on because this person is never gonna buy a book. Maybe they love gardening and we love gardening. Talking to this person is still an investment in friendship but ALSO in sales. Remember, most sales aren&#8217;t direct, they&#8217;re based off recommendation.</p>
<p>And, people DO buy gifts. Just sayin&#8217;.</p>
<p>I have people who aren&#8217;t into hard-core thrillers who bought my book <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Devils-Dance-Romi-Lachlan-Novel-ebook/dp/B07BH3C425/ref=pd_sim_351_1?_encoding=UTF8&amp;psc=1&amp;refRID=4WH5FBHY4PTRWFNF8GB4&amp;dpID=51GXAUE2-%252BL&amp;preST=_SY445_QL70_&amp;dpSrc=detail" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>The Devil&#8217;s Dance</em></a> for family and friends who DO read the genre I write. Many of you who come to this blog to learn about craft and social media bought my THRILLER (*gets all misty-eyed*) even though it&#8217;s not your thing, and my blog has nothing to do with murder and cartels.</p>
<p>THANK YOU! (and please feel free to buy more copies <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/1f600.png" alt="😀" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> )</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-25255" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/TheDevilsDance_KristenLamb_3D_Cover_Art-copy.jpg" alt="Kristen Lamb, social media for writers, building a brand with social media, building a brand using Twitter, how to use Twitter, Twitter for writers, Twitter and brands, How to Go Viral, finding readers" width="350" height="393" srcset="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/TheDevilsDance_KristenLamb_3D_Cover_Art-copy.jpg 586w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/TheDevilsDance_KristenLamb_3D_Cover_Art-copy-200x224.jpg 200w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/TheDevilsDance_KristenLamb_3D_Cover_Art-copy-268x300.jpg 268w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/TheDevilsDance_KristenLamb_3D_Cover_Art-copy-357x400.jpg 357w" sizes="(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px" /></p>
<h4><strong>Never underestimate the word-of-mouth power of someone who may never buy our book.</strong></h4>
<p>I have all KINDS of people I talk to who aren&#8217;t authors. BUT they have friends or family who are, or who aspire to be. Whose blog and social media book do you think they recommend?</p>
<p>If they&#8217;ll do it for me, why not you? Go serve and be the friend you&#8217;d like to have and watch something incredible happen.</p>
<p>In the end, using Twitter <em>wisely</em> is a fantastic investment that doesn&#8217;t take a lot of time. A handful of tweets a day over time grows deep roots that eventually yields fruits.</p>
<h2><strong>I love hearing from you! </strong></h2>
<p><strong>What do you WIN? For the month of AUGUST, for everyone who leaves a comment, I will put your name in a hat. If you comment and link back to my blog on your blog, you get your name in the hat twice. What do you win? The unvarnished truth from yours truly. </strong><strong>I will pick a winner once a month and it will be a critique of the first 20 pages of your novel, or your query letter, or your synopsis (5 pages or less).</strong></p>

<p>One would think a lot of what I teach about social media (Twitter) would be self-explanatory, but hey…we live in a world where a box of frozen corn dogs has a warning that I need to REMOVE the corn dogs from the box BEFORE placing in oven. Hell, who KNEW?</p>
<p>As a social media expert, I run into all kinds of strange behavior and tips that make me scratch my head. Social media is social, meaning it&#8217;s supposed to be an extension of how we might interact with other human beings <em>in person.</em> Today&#8217;s post (obviously) is tongue-and-cheek, but humor can be the best teacher even if we&#8217;ve oopsed.</p>
<p><strong>Tip #1&#8212;Only Use Automation</strong></p>
<p>Writing a 140 characters is SUPER time-consuming. We aren&#8217;t Jack London. Besides, people LOVE talking to robots. I know when I feel lonely, I call AT&amp;T because I know a human being will NEVER answer…EVER. Humans can be so boring and don&#8217;t offer us the option of hitting 6 if we want to hear everything they just said <em>all over again. </em></p>
<div id="attachment_8212" style="width: 248px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/screen-shot-2012-08-29-at-10-12-04-am.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-8212" class="size-full wp-image-8212" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/screen-shot-2012-08-29-at-10-12-04-am.png" alt="Yeah, all my BFFs send me automated messages." width="248" height="89" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-8212" class="wp-caption-text">Yeah, all my BFFs send me automated messages.</p></div>
<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>Real Life Application:</strong></span> Program cell phones to call friends and family at regular intervals to ask for money. They&#8217;d dig that.</p>
<p><strong>Tip #2&#8212;Make Sure All Preprogrammed Tweets are &#8220;Carefully Crafted&#8221;</strong></p>
<p>Because when we take time to artfully craft our spam, people don&#8217;t mind. They LOVE believing a real person is there only to be fooled. It&#8217;s like when that cute guy/gal in high school pretended to want to go out with us. Now we can relive that experience as adults by being duped into thinking we were chatting with a real person who actually cared.</p>
<p><a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2014-01-22-at-8-41-07-am.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-14523" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2014-01-22-at-8-41-07-am.png" alt="Screen Shot 2014-01-22 at 8.41.07 AM" width="479" height="520" srcset="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2014-01-22-at-8-41-07-am.png 479w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2014-01-22-at-8-41-07-am-276x300.png 276w" sizes="(max-width: 479px) 100vw, 479px" /></a></p>
<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>Real Life Application:</strong> </span>At the holidays, volunteer to bring a Honey-Baked ham, then show with Tofurkey. They won&#8217;t know the difference if we use <em>lots of ketchup.</em></p>
<p><strong>Tip #3&#8212;When Programming Tweets Include Popular Hashtags</strong></p>
<p>Who goes to social media to socialize? People LOVE finding a community of real people to talk to and then having it crowded out by the same advertising over and over&#8230;and over. Because research shows that it takes at least 20 times to see an annoying face before we want to punch it.</p>
<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>Real Life Application:</strong> </span>When attending any party, make sure to hand out lots of fliers, advertisements and coupons. Have a children&#8217;s book for sale? Stake out bounce house parties and put ads in all the little grab bags. Kids don&#8217;t want toys, candy and stickers, they want our BOOKS. Feel free to crash weddings, graduations, bachelor parties and maybe even funerals. If potential readers aren&#8217;t coming to us, we should go to them. Find where they gather then SELL. So what if it&#8217;s against their will?</p>
<p><strong>Tip #4&#8212;Make People Prove Who They Are Before Talking to Them</strong></p>
<p>Twitter validation services are awesome. We love meeting someone, only to have to jump through hoops to prove our love. We even get the added advantage of being redirected off Twitter to an outside site where we&#8217;re easily hacked.</p>
<p>How else will all our friends receive direct messages from porn sites posing as us? Nothing seals an on-line relationship like giving others a social media disease. Who will they think of when they have to spend hours removing viruses and trojans from their computers.</p>
<p>Can we say &#8220;Top of Mind&#8221;?</p>
<p>Come on! It takes <em>three whole seconds</em> to unfollow a bot. We need those precious three seconds to carefully craft witty preprogrammed tweets. Let the other person do the fifty hoops of leg-work to earn our trust. They have plenty of time.</p>
<p><a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2012-04-11-at-10-40-57-am.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6508" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2012-04-11-at-10-40-57-am.png" alt="Screen Shot 2012-04-11 at 10.40.57 AM" width="307" height="67" /></a></p>
<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>Real Life Application: </strong></span>Whenever we meet someone and start chatting, if we like them, halt all communication until they fill out a detailed background check. Throw in a pee test to be extra sure ;).</p>
<p><strong>Tip#5&#8212;Tweet LOTS of Articles&#8212;Ok, ALL Articles</strong></p>
<p>Most of us, when we wake up in the morning, think, &#8220;Gee, I wish I had a super long reading list. I sure miss my college syllabus.&#8221; Those of us with a corporate job LOVE people who hit Reply ALL so we can read <em>more.</em> Wikipedia is a hot place to hang out. Why not bring that encyclopedic magic to Twitter?</p>
<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>Real Life Application</strong></span>: Make sure to print off a box of articles for that wedding you were invited to. Who wants to dance or flirt when they could be reading about Three-Act Structure or Intestinal Parasites? Handing people a stack of reading material is way better than getting trapped in a &#8220;conversation.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Tip #6&#8212;Ask for Stuff Immediately</strong></p>
<div id="attachment_8211" style="width: 246px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/screen-shot-2012-08-29-at-10-11-53-am.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-8211" class="size-full wp-image-8211" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/screen-shot-2012-08-29-at-10-11-53-am.png" alt="Oh, sure! Let me drop everything to buy your book." width="246" height="98" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-8211" class="wp-caption-text">Oh, sure! Let me drop everything to buy your book.</p></div>
<p>The second someone befriends us, it&#8217;s our job to send an automated link to their Direct Messages so they can do stuff FOR US. Buy our book, like our FB page, follow our blog, or even answer a really inane question (as if we care about their answer) *rolls eyes*. <em>Hey, great to meet you. Do you like vampires or werewolves?</em></p>
<div id="attachment_14540" style="width: 337px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2014-01-22-at-10-44-38-am.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-14540" class="size-full wp-image-14540" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2014-01-22-at-10-44-38-am.png" alt="Huh?" width="337" height="50" srcset="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2014-01-22-at-10-44-38-am.png 337w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2014-01-22-at-10-44-38-am-300x45.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 337px) 100vw, 337px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-14540" class="wp-caption-text">Huh?</p></div>
<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>Real Life Application:</strong></span> If someone is nice to us in the grocery store, make sure to have books to sell and the ability to take credit cards on the spot. Sure, that person is trying to buy a chicken to make for dinner and now she can buy OUR BOOKS, too. Win-win. If we don&#8217;t have books for sale, we can ask for life, love or career advice from total strangers, because that isn&#8217;t creepy at ALL.</p>
<p><strong>Tip #7&#8212;Tweet from Several Accounts/Identities</strong></p>
<p>People on Twitter might miss out on all those &#8220;carefully crafted&#8221; preprogrammed tweets. Make sure to have anywhere from 2-7 identities sending the same messages. What&#8217;s better than spam? MORE SPAM, duh.</p>
<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>Real Life Application:</strong> </span>This tactic ROCKS for singles on the dating scene. Meet a date then several times throughout the conversation, change names and accents. Multiple-Personalities are just more people to love.</p>
<p><strong>Tip #8&#8212;Never Tweet ANYTHING Original Just Retweet</strong></p>
<p>Again, 140 characters cuts into word count. Save time and retweet what everyone else has to say. Two clicks? DONE.</p>
<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>Real Life Application:</strong> </span>Repeat what everyone else says. People love parrots, so why not harness that fluffy colorful cuteness? I know I LOVED it when my little brother repeated everything I said&#8230;until I put him in an arm-bar.</p>
<p><strong>Okay, Serious Now </strong></p>
<p>Twitter can be very valuable and a great place to make wonderful friends. Be real and enjoy. People are on social media to be <em>social</em>. We crave connection, fun and escape. If we wanted more ads we&#8217;d read the door in the bathroom stall or not bother fast-forwarding through commercials. We don&#8217;t need to be profound, deep or immensely witty to do well on Twitter, we just need to be vested, present and authentic ;).</p>
<p>What are some other things people do on social media that in real life would be ridiculous? I think sometimes we fail to extend that logic. Do you get tired of the same automation tweets? Have you ever bought a book because someone you friended automatically sent you a link to buy?</p>
<p>I LOVE hearing from you!</p>
<p>To prove it and show my love, for the month of JANUARY, everyone who leaves a comment I will put your name in a hat. If you comment and link back to my blog on your blog, you get your name in the hat twice. What do you win? The unvarnished truth from yours truly. I will pick a winner once a month and it will be a critique of the first 20 pages of your novel, or your query letter, or your synopsis (5 pages or less).</p>
<p><strong><span style="color:#0000ff;">For those who need help building a platform and keeping it SIMPLE, pick up a copy of my latest social media/branding book<em> <span style="color:#ff0000;">Rise of the Machines&#8212;Human Authors in a Digital World</span></em> on</span> <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Rise-Machines-Human-Authors-Digital-ebook/dp/B00DP7II4A/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1408979136&amp;sr=8-2&amp;keywords=Rise+of+the+machines" target="_blank">AMAZON</a>, <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/rise-of-the-machines/id727223890?mt=11" target="_blank">iBooks</a>, or <a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/rise-of-the-machines-kristen-lamb/1117165949?ean=2940148405238" target="_blank">Nook</a>. </strong></p>

<p style="text-align:left;">I&#8217;m still delusional that I might finish NaNoWriMo. I can write 16,000 more words in five days, right? Sigh. I&#8217;ve been away from the blog because I&#8217;m <em>in the trenches </em>with the fellow Nanos. Also I <em>really </em>needed to take a bit of a break. To help me with my pseudo-sabbatical? The AMAZING Social Media Maven Marcy Kennedy is here to help you learn how to use Twitter <em>effectively. </em></p>
<p>Using Twitter <em>effectively</em> is important. Twitter is a tool, but we can look like a tool or act like a tool if we rush in not knowing what we are DOING.</p>
<p>Great news is I have done all the dumb stuff so you don&#8217;t have to. Marcy might have, but I can&#8217;t speak for her (and she is kind of a Hermione) so she probably was smart enough to learn from MY dumb stuff…..</p>
<div id="attachment_16467" style="width: 285px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/screen-shot-2014-11-25-at-12-03-38-pm.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-16467" class="wp-image-16467 size-full" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/screen-shot-2014-11-25-at-12-03-38-pm.png" alt="Screen Shot 2014-11-25 at 12.03.38 PM" width="285" height="287" srcset="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/screen-shot-2014-11-25-at-12-03-38-pm.png 285w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/screen-shot-2014-11-25-at-12-03-38-pm-100x100.png 100w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/screen-shot-2014-11-25-at-12-03-38-pm-150x150.png 150w" sizes="(max-width: 285px) 100vw, 285px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-16467" class="wp-caption-text">&#8220;Marcy&#8221;</p></div>
<p>Take it away, Marcy!</p>
<p>***</p>
<p>Twitter often gets a bad reputation from people who don’t understand it or don’t know how to use it to its full potential to build an author platform. If we’re misusing it or not using it to its full potential, not only will it not help us, but we also won’t be having any fun. And social media should be fun!</p>
<p>So today I want to walk through the seven essentials every author needs to know about Twitter. When used correctly, Twitter can be one of the best tools for increasing traffic to our blogs and gaining new readers for our books.</p>
<h3>Essential #1 &#8211; Which Tools Work the Best for You</h3>
<div id="attachment_10744" style="width: 298px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/screen-shot-2013-04-02-at-7-19-38-am.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-10744" class="size-full wp-image-10744" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/screen-shot-2013-04-02-at-7-19-38-am.png" alt="Social media can feel a little like THIS..." width="298" height="382" srcset="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/screen-shot-2013-04-02-at-7-19-38-am.png 298w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/screen-shot-2013-04-02-at-7-19-38-am-234x300.png 234w" sizes="(max-width: 298px) 100vw, 298px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-10744" class="wp-caption-text">Social media can feel a little like THIS&#8230;</p></div>
<p>When we are new to Twitter, we might not realize we have options for tweeting other than using the twitter.com website. <span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>Hint: You don’t want to actually use Twitter.com to tweet.</strong></span> It only gives you one column and very few options. We need something more effective to manage our tweeting.</p>
<p>There are two basic choices—TweetDeck and Hootsuite. (There are others, but these two are the best.) You’ll hear from people who love one or the other, so the important thing is to choose the one you like the most.</p>
<h3>Essential #2 &#8211; How to Use Hashtags</h3>
<p>Using hashtags allows people we’re not already connected with to see our tweets (and vice versa). Effectively using hashtags is one of the quickest ways to build relationships with new people on Twitter…if we use them well.</p>
<h4>Since I don’t want this post to be as long as a novel, I’ll direct you to a post I did for Kristen earlier called “<a href="http://warriorwriters.wordpress.com/2013/03/01/twitter-basics-the-proper-care-and-feeding-of-hashtags/">Twitter Basics–The Proper Care and Feeding of Hashtags</a>.”</h4>
<h3><strong>Essential #3 &#8211; How to Use Lists</strong></h3>
<div id="attachment_15867" style="width: 412px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/screen-shot-2014-07-18-at-7-58-10-am.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-15867" class=" wp-image-15867" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/screen-shot-2014-07-18-at-7-58-10-am.png" alt="SO ME!" width="412" height="336" srcset="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/screen-shot-2014-07-18-at-7-58-10-am.png 872w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/screen-shot-2014-07-18-at-7-58-10-am-600x491.png 600w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/screen-shot-2014-07-18-at-7-58-10-am-300x245.png 300w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/screen-shot-2014-07-18-at-7-58-10-am-768x628.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 412px) 100vw, 412px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-15867" class="wp-caption-text">Organize ALL THE TWEETS!</p></div>
<p>One of the most common complaints I hear about Twitter is that the amount of tweets is overwhelming. There’s a simple solution—Twitter lists. A Twitter list can be added to a column in TweetDeck or a stream in Hootsuite so that we’re able to watch only the tweets made by the people on that list.</p>
<p>Once you know how to use them, they become a powerful tool not only for making Twitter more enjoyable, but also for building a viable author platform. Twitter lists can help:</p>
<ul>
<li>Make connections with agents, editors, or book reviewers</li>
<li>Build relationships with other writers in your genre</li>
<li>Keep track of subject matter experts; connect with writers who live in your area</li>
<li>Reciprocate for people who regularly retweet your tweets</li>
<li>Stay in touch with fans who contact you about your book or say something good about your writing.</li>
</ul>
<h3><strong>Essential #4 &#8211; What to Tweet </strong></h3>
<p><a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/screen-shot-2014-11-25-at-11-46-28-am.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-16464" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/screen-shot-2014-11-25-at-11-46-28-am.png" alt="Screen Shot 2014-11-25 at 11.46.28 AM" width="352" height="357" srcset="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/screen-shot-2014-11-25-at-11-46-28-am.png 493w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/screen-shot-2014-11-25-at-11-46-28-am-100x100.png 100w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/screen-shot-2014-11-25-at-11-46-28-am-296x300.png 296w" sizes="(max-width: 352px) 100vw, 352px" /></a></p>
<p>We’re writers, so the temptation is to be the “all writing, all the time” channel. Tweeting about writing some of the time is fine because it helps us connect with other writers, but <em>it won’t help us connect with readers.</em></p>
<p>Connecting with readers is about joining in conversations and tweeting links to material that your potential future readers might be interested in. If you’re writing science fiction, tweet about new scientific inventions, for example.</p>
<p>If you’re writing romance, your audience might be interested in posts about love and relationships, about the latest fashions, or about exotic locations. If you’re writing thrillers, you could find true crime posts and interesting tidbits from the news to share.</p>
<h3><strong>Essential #5 &#8211; Avoid Connecting Facebook and Twitter</strong></h3>
<p><a href="https://warriorwriters.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/screen-shot-2014-11-25-at-11-41-31-am.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-16462" src="https://warriorwriters.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/screen-shot-2014-11-25-at-11-41-31-am.png" alt="Screen Shot 2014-11-25 at 11.41.31 AM" width="445" height="317" /></a></p>
<p>We won’t have success on any social media site unless we’re there, actively participating and building relationships. That means that connecting any two sites so that what we post on one automatically shows up on the other is a bad idea.</p>
<p>But connecting Facebook and Twitter so that your tweets carry over is also a terrible idea because what people look for from the two sites is different. You might think you’re saving yourself time, but you’re risking coming across as a spam bot instead.</p>
<h3><strong>Essential #6 &#8211; What Can Get Us Sent to Twitter Jail?</strong></h3>
<p><a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/screen-shot-2014-11-25-at-11-42-36-am.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-16463" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/screen-shot-2014-11-25-at-11-42-36-am.png" alt="Screen Shot 2014-11-25 at 11.42.36 AM" width="391" height="435" srcset="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/screen-shot-2014-11-25-at-11-42-36-am.png 497w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/screen-shot-2014-11-25-at-11-42-36-am-270x300.png 270w" sizes="(max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px" /></a></p>
<p>When it comes to Twitter, there are three big no-nos that can land us in Twitter Jail. Consider these the equivalent of speeding, driving down the wrong side of the road, and driving under the influence.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Follower to Following Ratios</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>People hit the magic number of 2,000 people they’re following and suddenly Twitter won’t allow them to follow anyone new. This happens when we don’t have enough people following you compared to the number of people we’re following.</p>
<p>If this happens, you’re going to have to go and clear out some of the people who aren’t following you back using a tool like justunfollow.com. If your ratio is so far off that you’ve been thrown in Twitter jail, you’re not going to get out just by begging a few more people to follow you.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Tweeting Too Often</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>I’m still shocked that people have this happen given that the technical limit is 1,000 tweets per day. However, this is also broken down into hourly limits. So if you think of it that way, you’re limited to approximately 83 tweets per hour. That might sound like a ridiculously high number you’d never hit, but if you’re taking part in some kind of Twitter party (e.g., a launch party for a book), you may actually find you hit this limit.</p>
<p>With the growing popularity of those types of events, as well as themed chats, you need to be especially careful about this limit if you’re the administrator of the event.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Spammy Behavior</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>Most of you are probably already aware of the major spam behaviors to avoid. Kristen has done an amazing job of educating writers about what counts as spam, but in case any of you are new to Twitter or don’t read Kristen’s blog quite as dedicatedly as I do, I really think these are essential to know.</p>
<p><strong>Spam = If you post duplicate content over multiple accounts or multiple duplicate updates on one account.</strong></p>
<p>So let’s say you created an account both for yourself and for your book and you post the same updates to both. That technically violates Twitter’s spam policy. If you post the same updates over and over again on a single account, it’s also spam and Twitter will suspend your account for this kind of behavior.</p>
<p><strong>Spam = If your updates consist mainly of links, and not personal updates.</strong></p>
<p>This is another reason why the conversation aspect of Twitter is so important. This is a social media site founded with the intent of both sharing information and providing people will a quick, easy way to voice their opinions and chat with others. <h3>Essential #10 &#8211; How to Connect Your Website to Twitter</h3>
<div id="attachment_12870" style="width: 484px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/platform.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-12870" class=" wp-image-12870" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/platform.jpg" alt="Original image via Wikimedia Commons, courtesy of FEMA" width="484" height="323" srcset="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/platform.jpg 787w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/platform-600x401.jpg 600w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/platform-300x201.jpg 300w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/platform-768x513.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-12870" class="wp-caption-text">Original image via Wikimedia Commons, courtesy of FEMA</p></div>
<p>Our home base on the Internet should never be a social media network. We should have a website (and ideally blog on our website as well) because that is a <strong>solid foundation to build upon.</strong></p>
<p>Part of what we want to do is create a circle between our blog and our social media networks. We share material on social media, which draws people back to our blog, and they enjoy the content, so they return to social media and share it with the people they’re connected with. And the cycle continues and grows.</p>
<p>You’d be surprised how many people chop a hole in this cycle because they don’t enable sharing buttons on their blog or website. Make sure you have a button that people can click to tweet your blog post right from your website.</p>

</em></p>
<div id="attachment_8212" style="width: 248px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/screen-shot-2012-08-29-at-10-12-04-am.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-8212" class="size-full wp-image-8212" alt="Yeah, all my BFFs send me automated messages." src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/screen-shot-2012-08-29-at-10-12-04-am.png" width="248" height="89" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-8212" class="wp-caption-text">Yeah, all my BFFs send me automated messages.</p></div>
<p><a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2014-01-22-at-8-41-07-am.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-14523" alt="Screen Shot 2014-01-22 at 8.41.07 AM" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2014-01-22-at-8-41-07-am.png" width="479" height="520" srcset="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2014-01-22-at-8-41-07-am.png 479w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2014-01-22-at-8-41-07-am-276x300.png 276w" sizes="(max-width: 479px) 100vw, 479px" /></a></p>
We even get the added advantage of being redirected off Twitter to an outside site where we&#8217;re easily hacked. How else will all our friends receive direct messages from porn sites posing as us? Nothing seals an on-line relationship like giving others a social media disease. Who will they think of when they have to spend hours removing viruses and trojans from their computers.</p>
<p>Can we say &#8220;Top of Mind&#8221;?</p>
<p>Come on! It takes <em>three whole seconds</em> to unfollow a bot. We need those precious three seconds to carefully craft witty preprogrammed tweets. Let the other person do the fifty hoops of leg-work to earn our trust. They have plenty of time.</p>
<p><a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2012-04-11-at-10-40-57-am.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6508" alt="Screen Shot 2012-04-11 at 10.40.57 AM" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2012-04-11-at-10-40-57-am.png" width="307" height="67" /></a></p>
<div id="attachment_8211" style="width: 246px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/screen-shot-2012-08-29-at-10-11-53-am.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-8211" class="size-full wp-image-8211" alt="Oh, sure! Let me drop everything to buy your book." src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/screen-shot-2012-08-29-at-10-11-53-am.png" width="246" height="98" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-8211" class="wp-caption-text">Oh, sure!
<div id="attachment_14540" style="width: 337px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2014-01-22-at-10-44-38-am.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-14540" class="size-full wp-image-14540" alt="Huh?" src="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2014-01-22-at-10-44-38-am.png" width="337" height="50" srcset="https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2014-01-22-at-10-44-38-am.png 337w, https://authorkristenlamb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/screen-shot-2014-01-22-at-10-44-38-am-300x45.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 337px) 100vw, 337px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-14540" class="wp-caption-text">Huh?</p></div>
<p>I LOVE hearing from you!</p>
<p>What are some other things people do on social media that in real life would be ridiculous? I think sometimes we fail to extend that logic. Do you get tired of the same automation tweets? Have you ever bought a book because someone you friended automatically sent you a link to buy?</p>
<p>To prove it and show my love, for the month of January, <strong>everyone who leaves a comment I will put your name in a hat. If you comment and link back to my blog on your blog, you get your name in the hat twice. </strong>What do you win? The unvarnished truth from yours truly. <strong>I will pick a winner <em>once a month</em> and it will be a critique of <strong>the first 20 pages of your novel</strong>, <strong>or your query letter, or your synopsis (5 pages or less)</strong></strong><strong>. </strong></p>
