<p>If I had the energy, I&#8217;d actually be really excited about today&#8217;s guest blog post because Lisa and I are also teaching a workshop on this topic in September. We are going to be talking about how to create strong, authentic female characters in fiction. Lisa is specifically focusing on how to avoid extremes, tropes, and types. I will be talking about how to TRULY get into the mindset of historical female characters and what defines strong for them (which is going to be another blog post).</p>
<p><strong>Okay, over to Lisa!</strong></p>
<h3>Character, not caricature.</h3>
<p>Lisa here! Portraying strong women authentically is tricky. Most of the time, I find strong female characters are caricatures of an extreme: the dim-witted blond, the stock-in-trade man with boobs, the femme fatale. These are stereotypes sure, but what they really are is extreme examples of real life. Can you find an example from history of a female warrior in a male-dominated society – sure, but she’s an outlier. If you want to write an outlier character that’s fine, but let the traits that make her an outlier be the source of her strength not her ability to wield a sword.</p>

<p>Let’s look at a real-world example, Malala Yousafzai. She’s a strong woman, but is she strong because she survived a bullet wound to the head? Yes, partly, but moreso she’s strong because of the choices that led to her being targeted, and the friends and family who empowered her to follow her heart.</p>
<p>Are you able to portray women without these extremes that’s both likable (or at least worthy of cheering for) and surprises readers? That’s the tricky part.</p>
<h3>Brave, not dumb.</h3>
<p>I love to study Amazons, that mythical race of female warriors written of by the Greeks. The truth is that Amazons were a cautionary tale for their times. This is what might happen if women could make their own decisions about marriage, family, war or the economy. Exotic? Dangerous? Lust-worthy? Absolutely. But in nearly every Greek tale, the Amazons inevitably rush headlong into battle over pride or vanity and are overwhelmingly outnumbered against a professional army. That’s not heroic, it’s stupid. Most women, especially strong women, are not stupid.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The danger with the extremes is that characters become one-dimensional. The only reason that character exists is because the hero needs a woman to encourage him. You have no story-based reason for making that character female other than you liked that idea, needed a victim to motivate a male character to act, a reason to insert sex, etc. There was nothing about being female that placed obstacles in her path or helped that character succeed.</p>
<p>Ever did that experiment where you write on a coffee filter with a black marker, get the filter wet and see the variety of colors that went into making black? Strength is like the colors that make up that black marker. Strength is not one thing or act, just like black is not a primary color, but it’s your job as the writer to show all the different colors that make up that character’s strength.</p>
<h3>Truth is a subtle strength.</h3>
<p>Let’s look at Veronica Roth’s Tris. One of the first things we learn about her is that she chooses to leave Abnegation and join Dauntless because she knows herself and must be true to that. She makes that choice knowing what some of the consequences will be. That’s strength. There are a lot of natural obstacles in her way (one of them being female without any athletic training competing against guys), but she’s not afraid to make friends or find an ally. Being a lone wolf can represent strength but it’s also a self-protection mechanism rooted in fear.</p>
<p>I love <em>100</em>. I know a lot of people point to Clarke as a strong character, but personally I’m more drawn to Octavia and Raven. These are girls who have fought their way to influence in a variety of ways and through painful personal sacrifices. We’ve seen them as outliers and leaders, run from pain, lash out in anger, deny their own desires, and escape from life. They are intelligent, courageous, fighters, who love, grieve, chase, hate, forgive – the whole spectrum. And each time they get knocked down, they blunder and stumble, but then they get stronger. That’s real life.</p>
<p>Female characters need to be strong, but they need to be real, varied, unique, and as individual as possible.</p>

<p>Ah personal vows. I&#8217;m big on those and one core vow I made several years ago was to seek out the best of the best. Locate talent, nurture it, then share it with you guys. I&#8217;m passionate about mastery. Mastery however requires sacrifice, and that sacrifice is we cannot do all things. We need to let go. Knowing that, I made it my personal mission (and my company <a href="https://wanaintl.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">W.A.N.A. International&#8217;s</a> mission) to recruit those who were masters of THEIR realms.</p>
<p>My motto? If I am the smartest person in the room, I&#8217;ve done something horribly wrong.</p>
<p>Many of you have already had the pleasure of taking a class with <em>USA Today Best-Selling Author</em> Cait Reynolds. If not? She has a whole list of classes coming up (listed below). Today, however, another master is here to share her gifts with us today.</p>

<p>Want to raise the stakes for your character through internal conflict? Deep POV is a great technique to bring out this tension because it allows the reader deep into the character’s psyche and allows for an intense examination of their motivations and morals.</p>
<p>Drawing a line in the sand, giving your character a personal vow, can create the kind of inner turmoil that drives a character to outrageous page-turning decisions and mistakes. Vows also give insight into backstory and help define character voice.</p>
<p>I love that scene from the <em>Fellowship Of The Ring</em> where Gandalf screams at the Balrog: &#8220;You shall not pass!&#8221; Awesome. That was a game changer scene, it ratcheted up the conflict several notches. Gandalf went to the ultimate extreme to make sure that Balrog did not pursue the rest of the Fellowship.</p>
<h3><strong>Does your main character have a line in the sand, a personal boundary past which they will not cross? Great!</strong></h3>
<h3><strong>Now go shove them off the cliff.</strong></h3>
<h4><strong><em>*Note: Not every character does or should have a personal vow. It adds a layer of complexity that requires skill with characterization to pull off well because a vow should influence a character&#8217;s motivations and morals, but it&#8217;s rarely their main story goal.*</em></strong></h4>

<p>Ever whispered a vow in the dark of the night, tears streaming down your cheeks? Maybe you were caught in the middle of a messy divorce. Maybe you experienced a trauma of some sort, the kind that haunts you – and down deep inside you made yourself a promise so that hurt never happens again:</p>

<p>Everyone has a line in the sand, a secret vow. No matter what else happens, this is one inviolable line they will not cross. Most people, at some point, make several of these vows, some innocuous, some more serious.</p>
<p>Some people make these vows consciously and others are completely unaware of these personal vows. We are more committed to some vows than others. Some vows are made to prevent a past hurt or harm from being repeated (I’ll never date a drug lord again), and some vows are harmful and need to go (I will never weigh over 100 pounds).</p>
<h2><strong>Pushed Beyond All Limits</strong></h2>
<p>Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake Vampire Hunter novel <em>Blue Moon</em> uses a really great personal vow as a story element. Anita Blake has several rules or lines in the sand which have been firmly established in previous books in the series, but she is forced to violate one rule after another. It started off innocently enough, Blake is uncomfortable, she’s not happy, but she can shake it off.</p>
<p>As the novel continues, Blake faces escalating circumstances. Some of her compromises haunt her, change her (and not always for the better) and she has to figure out how to live with that. Blake ends up back-tracking and…well, go read it. I couldn’t put it down.</p>
<h3><strong>But the reverse can also work.</strong></h3>
<p>I loved the movie <em>Law Abiding Citizen</em> with Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx. At the beginning of the movie, Foxx’s lawyer character comes across as a good guy, but someone willing to cut corners to achieve what he saw as the greater good. Butler’s character creatively, and rather gruesomely, pushes Foxx to the point where he has to dig in and say here and no farther.</p>
<p>By the end of the movie, Foxx sees the problem with cutting certain corners and draws a line in the sand: <strong>I will never make a deal with a murderer ever again.</strong></p>
<h3><strong>Complexity</strong></h3>

<p>Vows are hard to pull off in simple plots. These lines in the sand are often in addition to a character&#8217;s main goal in the story. For instance, Scarlett O&#8217;Hara in <em>Gone With The Wind</em> vows: &#8220;As God is my witness, I&#8217;m going to live through this and when it&#8217;s all over I&#8217;ll never be hungry again&#8230;&#8221; Scarlett&#8217;s conscious goal for the story though is to be with Ashley Wilkes. *shakes head – never understood that* That&#8217;s what she schemes for, dreams about, etc.</p>
<p>Her unconscious goal is to have the love of a man who can make her feel secure (ahh – see the built-in tension there when what she’s pursuing won’t get her what she really wants). She isn’t even aware of this internal conflict until the end of the book when Ashley finally becomes available and she realizes it&#8217;s actually Rhett she wants. Rhett Butler is the one who makes her feel secure (she talks about how he comforts her in the night after a bad dream, etc), but now Rhett&#8217;s gone.</p>
<p>However, Scarlett never went hungry again. Her preoccupation with money caused a lot of problems for her, because she confused money with security. It’s easy to see how that vow added tension and conflict for her character.</p>
<h3><strong>The Writer’s Dilemma</strong></h3>

<p>The problem with this story element is that a reader might lose respect if a character breaks ALL of their personal vows. For a character to remain worth cheering for, if a line in the sand has been defined, at some point the character has to stand their ground no matter what it costs them.</p>
<p>There may be gray areas of their vow they compromise on, there may be some backtracking. They may make a vow part way through the story as Scarlett does. Maybe the character needs to give up a harmful or unrealistic vow. Regardless, these vows strongly influence the character’s motivations and desires heading into the big main conflict. If they don’t, I’d question whether they need to be there.</p>
<p>Personal vows are one way to add compelling conflict, but it requires an intensely personal POV.</p>

<p>Talk to us! We love hearing from you. Well, I do, namely because I am lonely and y&#8217;all are seriously interesting. What vows have you made? Good or bad or dumb?</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve done all of the above, and have particularly excelled in bad and dumb vows (but I&#8217;m much better now <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/1f642.png" alt="🙂" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> ). Seriously, I think one of my greatest strengths is I am loyal, but sometimes being loyal is just being epically stupid when you&#8217;re loyal to the wrong people, ideas, goals etc.</p>
<p>For instance, I vowed I wouldn&#8217;t give up on my first novel. Took 5 years to see I actually didn&#8217;t even HAVE a novel so that was a seriously stupid vow. Remember what I always tell you guys, <strong>Persistence looks a lot like stupid. </strong>Sometimes it IS hard to tell.</p>

<p>Sure, I do a good job on Facebook and am an expert on the basics, but if you REALLY want to up your game? Really want to know how to get the most out of Facebook, particularly the fan page? There is no one I could recommend more than journalist, columnist, speaker <a href="http://lisahallwilson.com/" target="_blank">Lisa Hall-Wilson</a>. She taught me what I know and I have a lot more to learn so believe you me, I am taking her class.</p>
<p>Lisa is here to talk about a subject we all face&#8212;being invisible. It does no good to be on Facebook or create content if we don&#8217;t know how to play the game. And trust me, a lot of it is a game. What is the best content? How do we use it? Grow it? Maximize it? How can we get a fantastic ROI off Facebook without living there?</p>

<p>I haven’t been around for a while. Life. Stuff. *shrug* Kristen and I have been chatting for a while about me teaching again, so I’m back! I miss W.A.N.A, and Facebook has changed SO MUCH since I last taught a class. How are you feeling about Facebook?</p>
<p><em>Finding it hard to stand out from the crowd?</em></p>
<p>Yeah, there’s a lot of people using Facebook to sell something. They’re all clamoring for attention and Facebook has to keep changing the rules to stymie the spammers and cheats. It’s harder than ever to get noticed. Hits you right in the feels. I get it. So lemme ask you&#8230;</p>
<h2><strong>How’s Your Organic Reach?</strong></h2>
<p>Is that too personal? Listen, I don’t teach people how to use ads on Facebook (though I run ads myself), because there’s lots of other people out there already doing that. Ads are awesome, and Facebook has one of the most targeted ad systems on the interwebs. There’s great bang for your buck, if you know your audience. I teach writers how to reach readers organically using Facebook.</p>
<p>Here’s the problem with writers and Facebook ads.</p>
<h3><strong>Ads only amplify what you’re already doing.</strong></h3>
<p>If you can’t get people to click through to your blog, comment/share/react to your content organically, your ads are unlikely to do well.</p>

<h3><strong>Facebook is S L O W</strong></h3>
<p>I know. It can be disheartening and frustrating. It’s also easy to get sucked in and lose hours of time you should have spent writing. Be strong! However, if you can get 5% or even 10% of your Facebook friends/followers to respond to a post organically, you’re onto something.</p>
<p>If you follow the W.A.N.A. way of building platform organically, the changes and tweaks Facebook makes to the way things look or the algorithm, won’t affect you. You’ll have the kind of platform that will grow your readership. With that skill in hand, when you can afford to pay for ads, you’ll already know what your audience is interested in, what they’ll respond to, and what value they’re looking to you to provide.</p>
<h2><strong>2 Reasons To Try Video</strong></h2>
<ul>
<li>Facebook has tweaked the algorithm to give extra organic boost to videos. So, either a Facebook Live video (where you live stream from your phone to your Facebook Page, Profile, or to a Group) or you upload a video created elsewhere to Facebook. (Videos shared from other sites are considered links and won’t get the extra organic boost) 135% more organic reach than photos according to <a href="http://www.socialmediatoday.com/marketing/top-5-facebook-video-statistics-2016-infographic">Social Media Today</a>.</li>
<li>Facebook Live videos are watched 3.5x more than non-live video. This “serves to illustrate the importance of authentic, ‘off-the-cuff,’ and in-the-moment content with audiences worldwide.” (<a href="http://mediakix.com/2016/08/facebook-video-statistics-everyone-needs-know/#gs.BaVJUXc">source here</a>)</li>
</ul>
<p>Now, I know that since Facebook rolled out the auto-play feature on videos, view stats can be deceiving. The salient point here is that Facebook really wants people to publish videos and they will reward you by showing your content to more people than usual organically.</p>
<p>Video is simply another storytelling platform. Don’t get freaked out. So, what should you post? I spent a couple of hours with Facebook and Google and checked out the video offerings from the biggest trad and indie published authors.</p>
<h3><strong>What Seems To Be Working?</strong></h3>
<p>Facebook Live videos have the most views (relative to the audience size on the Page). Fans seem to really love these videos. I wouldn’t say there’s an optimal length (based on my unscientific collection of data), but having something of value to say is important.</p>
<p>Most of the authors with the highest views were announcing a new book, meeting with someone their audience found interesting, offering value (non-fiction authors answering questions or giving advice), or glimpses of whatever locale the author found themselves in.</p>
<p>Brene Brown has this fun video of a full-out marching band she ran into at an event she was speaking at. Nora Roberts shared a live video of a giant ad her publisher created with her book cover projected onto the front of a building in New York.</p>
<p>Laurel K Hamilton posted a video of her opening a shipment of hard cover books of her newest release that had just arrived at her home “Book number 25” she says.</p>
<p>Marie Force shared a video with her behind-the-scenes team. Hugh Howey… He continues to tease readers with videos of dolphins swimming around his boat, jumping off cliffs (nearly naked), as he cruises the world writing remotely… We’re not going to mention Hugh Howey again. Agreed? His content can’t be duplicated.</p>
<p>None of those videos were professionally done. They were captured on a phone and posted without any editing. They were personal, behind-the-scenes, glimpses into the writer or the writer’s life. Fans love that. Instead of taking a photo, take a 16second video of that crazy rainstorm that held up your plane, those ruins you’re visiting for research, or an author you ran into at a conference.</p>
<p>James Patterson’s publisher created a splashy series of videos for his newest release. I have a feeling there was a lot of money spent on those videos. The video that got the most views? James Patterson spends 16 seconds telling readers why they should read his new book and the cover flashes on the screen at the very end. It was short, simple, engaging, intriguing, and well received.</p>
<p>Did it directly translate into book sales? I can’t say. But at only 16 seconds long, combined with Facebook’s autoplay feature, chances are good that a lot of people saw that video straight through and came away knowing the title of his newest book.</p>
<p>The plain fact is that all content is not going to be equal on Facebook, but the key is, the more we learn, the more we know, the easier it is for us to keep pace with and take advantage of this powerful platform. Facebook is slow, I already mentioned that. It has a lot of potential energy, sort of like a boulder sitting on the edge of a cliff. But we rock that boulder enough ways the same direction and over time? Once it gets rolling? That sucker is tough to slow down.</p>

<p>My goal for the past several years has been to guide authors in The Digital Age and teach how to create a strong author brand capable of driving book sales. Social media is important, but we all know it&#8217;s also cluttered with competition because there are few if any gatekeepers.</p>
<p>There are no threshold guardians approving who can and cannot have a Facebook page or even a blog. Granted, a social media platform is powerful, but a key component is <em>time. </em>On-line platforms rarely yield instant results and time is what will eventually give us advantage.</p>
<p>Traditional media outlets are a different story. Many people still watch the news, read the paper, listen to radio and pick up magazines. These forms of media are a highly valuable asset to any platform because the audience <em>knows</em> that not just anybody can gain access. Results can come faster and be far more wide-spread. Yet, how do we get our foot in the door?</p>

<p>What makes a media release effective? It gets you the attention you’re looking for. A great media release puts cheeks in the seats, gets coverage, gets the interview. It’s that simple.</p>
<p>I’ve been a professional freelance writer for almost five years. In that time, I’ve worked from some stellar and deplorable media releases. I’ve written media releases picked up by local print and radio media, and large national and daily media. A certain aspect of getting your story picked up is simple timing – what else is going on?</p>
<p>But there are ways to tip the scales in your favor! In my class on Thursday I’ll be giving the inside scoop on how to write an effective media release (including a proven template) but here are 3 quick tips to get you started!</p>
<p><strong>What’s The Story?</strong></p>
<p>When planning your media release, remember editors and radio hosts want to report on the news. Show me the money, baby! Give them something they can report on. They want news. Your feel good, I’m-so-proud-of-myself media release is not going to get you the desired attention. What about your book, your upcoming appearance, is news worthy? Why should that editor’s readers care?</p>
<p>Be honest with yourself!</p>

<p><strong>Think Like A Journalist </strong></p>
<p>Reporters, editors, and radio hosts are busy people who work in a fast-paced world. If your media release doesn’t clearly answer the who, what, when, where, why of the story <strong>in less than a page</strong> you’re probably out of luck unless you’re a big name.</p>
<p>Ask yourself this question: If I had to write an article promoting this event, what would I need to know to write the story?</p>
<p><strong>The Power of Free</strong></p>
<p>Many many times, I’ve had editors simply run my media release. They might shorten it, add a photo, rearrange a couple paragraphs – but they run it verbatim. Do I get credit? No. Do I care? No. These editors have space to fill. They’re looking for well-written clean copy their readers are interested in. You fill those needs, offer that content for FREE and your chances of being picked up increase exponentially.</p>

We know you guys are trying hard to be responsible professionals and there is a LOT of bad advice floating around out there. We have all oopsed, so don&#8217;t worry. <p>I feel a bit like the soup nazi with this post – no Facebook for you! But some people seriously need a time out. It’s promote promote promote all the time in a one-channel informercial. Hands up – have you been a victim of these people?</p>
<p>I wrote <a href="http://janefriedman.com/2013/09/18/5-reasons-use-facebook-profiles/">this post for Jane Friedman on 5 reasons why you should use your Facebook Profile (not a Page) to build platform</a>. What I need to make clear is that with freedom comes responsibility. There are key rules about Facebook etiquette that many are either unaware of or ignore.</p>
<p>Stop!</p>
<p>Using your Profile instead of a Page to build platform gives you the ability to spam people in a way Pages cannot. Pages cannot join groups or group conversations. Pages can’t comment on or post a Profile, they can’t send private messages to Profiles. Pages can’t force-add people to events. The list goes on. Just because you can, because Facebook doesn’t explicitly say it’s against the rules – doesn’t mean it’s not icky, annoying and spam</p>
<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>1. Do not post your own content on another’s Profile wall (timeline).</strong></span></p>
<p>This is a pretty personal one cause this recently happened to me. First, if you goof on this one, apologize, remove the post and consider it a lesson learned. Don’t argue. This is considered personal space. Anything posted on my timeline is seen as endorsed by me. It’s akin to going to a friend’s jewelry party and bringing along samples to your own soap business and handing them out uninvited.</p>
<p>Great way to never get asked back.</p>
<p>If people are posting their content on your wall often, you can decide who can post on your timeline if necessary. I know some Indie authors who have been forced to do this because the spam is so bad.</p>
<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>2. Do Not Tag People in Unrelated Status Updates or Photos</strong></span></p>
<p>What do I mean by unrelated? If I quote another blogger or author in a blog post, I might tag them. If they inspired that blog post, I might tag them. But I might not. And I’m not going to do it more than once or twice a year. If you’re just doing it to get noticed it’s considered spam.</p>
<p>For the love of cookie sprinkles&#8230;.STOP.</p>
<p>I strongly recommend you turn on approvals for all tags. People can tag you in a photo or status update, this requires you to approve those before they show up on your timeline – because people use this to spam your friends but your friends might not realize you were spammed, which makes life seriously awk-ward.</p>
<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>3. Do not bomb conversations with blog links.</strong></span></p>
<p>I see this all the time. Do not find a lively conversation thread and drop a link to your blog there. That hit and run tactic is super annoying and is spam. If you are an active participant in the conversation and you have a blog post that directly relates to the topic at hand, go ahead and share that link in the spirit of no-reciprocation-expected.</p>
<p>You’re sharing this because it adds value – no strings attached. Dropping a link into the conversation you’re not a part of is spam regardless of whether the post could remotely be relevant.</p>
<p><strong><span style="color:#0000ff;">4. Do not create a group and force-add 2000 people.</span></strong></p>
<p>Facebook will let you invite a ridiculous amount of people to an event or group. I get event invites all the time. Those can be annoying, but what’s worse is being force-added to a group that’s a 24/7 spam channel! You can go ahead and create a group where two or three people post links to their blogs and courses if you want to – but let people opt into that. I had to remove myself twice from the same group and finally clicked the box that says do not allow myself to be added again.</p>
<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>5.  Any story can be seen by friends and seen as an endorsement.</strong></span></p>
<p>When you click like, comment or share something, you create a ‘story’ within the Facebook environment. When you share an update or link, it’s seen as an endorsement unless you add an editorial comment stating otherwise. However, what many people using their Profiles to build platform don’t realize is that your likes and comments can be shown to friends, and friends of friends depending. You can’t filter that.</p>
<p>You’re following an erotica author friend because you wanted to support her, even though you write children’s fiction. She posts an alluring pic of a near-naked man and you liked the pic – for whatever reason. You might not have liked the pic or the man, but wanted to support the author say.</p>
<p>Doesn’t matter.</p>
<p>At best Facebook could show that story (that you liked that content) to friends FB believes have similar interests. You have no control whether that shows up in someone’s news feed or their ticker or at all.</p>
<p>Something else to consider is that you can’t opt out of sponsored stories. Sometimes Facebook will recommend Pages to users and they will use your name and profile pic (all public content) by way of public endorsement to your friends. Someone can purchase a sponsored story ad and your face and name could be used to promote that Page.</p>
<p>We can complain all we want, that’s the price of admission. If you are using your Profile to build platform keep this in mind! I can’t stress this enough. Every action you take can spread a lot further than you intend. If you wouldn’t say it to your mother in her living room, don’t say it (or like it) on Facebook.</p>

It&#8217;s a closed group so there&#8217;s a measure of privacy, but it means you&#8217;ll have to request to join. *psst &#8211; I&#8217;ll approve you.** I&#8217;ll post about updates and changes, and answer questions (within reason), but I really want this to be a safe place to ask questions and share experiences as well. Abusers will be removed!! <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/1f600.png" alt="😀" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>

<p>One of the most common questions I get asked concerning Facebook is ‘What Do I Post?’</p>
<p>My advice is: ‘Let Them See Oz’</p>
<p>Your content strategy (yes – that dreaded word usually followed by a wide-eyed stare and a writer mumbling, <i>I need a plan? Nobody told me I needed a plan.</i> I’m telling you – you need a plan) must be varied, and there are a few key components to it – but something readers are always looking for is a peek into your world.</p>

<p>Whatever. Writers who shun the spotlight like Salinger, Harper Lee and Cormac McCarthy are the exceptions. Listen, to readers authors are these secluded exotic individuals &#8211; celebrities. Don’t laugh. I’m serious. lol – Well, mostly. Readers don’t understand the creative process, they fall in love with our voice, our wit, our insights, our quirky way of seeing things, the questions we ask. They beg for more from the characters they love, the worlds they want to jump into.</p>
<p>And they want to see Oz.</p>

<p>I know Kristen’s into <em>Star Wars</em> and <em>Star Trek</em> and Zombies – but let’s not overlook the classics here. When Toto pulled back the curtain for the very first time, what were you expecting? That ordinary looking man was not what I had in mind – but I loved him even more because he was ordinary.</p>

<p>Let your readers into your world (and I’m not talking about putting a shot of your breakfast bowl on Instagram). Readers are dying for a peek behind the proverbial curtain into the writer&#8217;s world and the writer&#8217;s mind. Whether this is a literal peek &#8211; a shot of you in your office or on location researching, or maybe sneak peeks on upcoming work, deals/coupons/sales, insights or editorials on links or events. What makes you happy? What makes you shake your fist at the sky?</p>
<p><i>But Lisa, I’m a private person. I don’t like to post about personal stuff.</i></p>
<p>Kristen’s written about that A LOT like here <a href="http://warriorwriters.wordpress.com/2011/03/25/why-pen-names-suck-can-make-us-crazy/">Why Pen Names Suck &amp; Can Make Us Crazy</a>. If you can write like Salinger or McCarthy then maybe you’ll win the author lotto and get to remain hidden in your cave. “May the odds be ever in your favor.” Yeeeeah – we know how that worked out.</p>
<p>Seriously – nobody wants to know what you ate for breakfast, or – being totally honest here – that your toddler finally figured out potty training. You don’t have to be THAT personal. Be yourself. What would you tell a group of friends about yourself in a local coffee shop?</p>
<p>Fans are tripping over themselves for this kind of stuff:</p>
<p><b>George R.R. Martin says the HBO’s version of the Iron Throne is WRONG</b></p>
<p>George R.R. Martin, author the Game of Thrones tales now a hit series on HBO, <a href="http://grrm.livejournal.com/327569.html">recently posted on his blog about his vision for the actual Iron Throne used in the TV series.</a><b> He says the show got it wrong! </b>I&#8217;m hooked. How did HE envision the actual throne? What did they get wrong? And he has an artist&#8217;s rendering of the throne as he sees it &#8211; almost.</p>
<p>I’m not even a fan and I clicked through to read this. I’ve never watched the TV series, and I only read 1.5 books in the series because I threw the book across the room the third time he killed a character I had fallen in love with. But I wanted to know what the director/producers got wrong. I wanted to know what HE saw in his head.</p>
<p>This is exactly the kind of thing readers are eager to consume. Above, I inserted a few random examples from best-selling authors using Facebook to connect with readers (not directly sell books). Find an author on Facebook who writes the same genre you do. What are they posting? How often are they posting? How are they ‘pulling back the curtain’ for readers? I’m not suggesting you copy what they’re doing, but use what they’re doing as a jumping off point for content specific to your brand, your writing, your fans.</p>

Just so y&#8217;all know, the writer who insulted me is now a peep. We kept talking. I apologized for having the skin of a grape and this person told me I was right and they had NO idea the tone of the message was as insulting as it was.</p>
<p>We chatted about social media and WANA ways and had a blast, and it was awesome to make a new friend. This writer felt super bad. But, I mentioned that it all worked out for the better because, had I not been insulted, we would never have talked and gotten to know how much we had in common (though I do not recommend insulting people to make friends).</p>
<p>See, told you guys sometimes tough love is in order ;).</p>

<p><strong>My Friends and Family Don&#8217;t Care About Writing Stuff</strong></p>
<p>Okay, friends and family, <em>regular people</em>? That is code for &#8220;READER.&#8221; Writers all create one big happy writer party and talk to each other, but writers can only buy so many books. And frankly?</p>
<p>We are oversold and worn out.</p>
<p>If we only include writers, our platforms can easily become inbred and then all they do is drink cheap beer and listen to Tammy Wynette&#8230;.then start firing a shotgun in the air. Keep it up and your platform will bring home a bass boat.</p>
<p>Moving on&#8230;</p>
<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>It&#8217;s estimated that as much as 75% of the population believes they would one day love to write a book. This means THREE-FOURTHS of the population believes they are writers&#8230;.even though they aren&#8217;t writing.</strong></span> So if we cut out regular people, we are actually just cutting out people fascinated by writers and writing. They LOVE writers, even if it is to be a fly on the wall and maybe catch on to how we create the magic.</p>
<p>Sure friends and family might give us a hard time about deciding to write, but often this is birthed by jealousy. They believe they have stories to tell, they just haven&#8217;t found the bravery to do it. They will often be the best salespeople we have, even if they don&#8217;t read what we write.</p>
<p><strong>Okay, Even If They Don&#8217;t Care</strong></p>
<p>Humans are a helpful bunch. How do we show love? We give unsolicited advice, provide solutions, and answer questions. If Aunt Lola doesn&#8217;t like vampire books, but a lady in her sewing circle complains that she needs to get a gift for her granddaughter who is slap-happy in LOVE with vampires? Who will Aunt Lola INSTANTLY think of?</p>
<p>This is called &#8220;word of mouth.&#8221;</p>

<p><strong>But I Will Fill Up Their Feed With Stuff They Don&#8217;t Care About</strong></p>
<p>Remember I said you need to understand how Facebook works? Facebook wants you to have as pleasant of an experience as possible because&#8230;um, <strong>then you show up</strong> and get addicted and let dinner burn because you&#8217;re too busy quoting Bruce Campbell on an <em>Army of Darkness</em> thread on Kristen&#8217;s wall.</p>
<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>Newsfeeds will only show content from people we have engaged with</strong></span>. So if your family or coworkers could give a flying patooty about writing? Odds are they are never &#8220;Liking&#8221; or commenting on those threads, so guess what? <span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>Your stuff eventually won&#8217;t appear in their news feeds (and never underestimate the modern human&#8217;s ability to ignore stuff that doesn&#8217;t interest them).</strong></span></p>
<p>This is why fan pages can be a serious sticky wicket. We can&#8217;t engage with a monument to someone&#8217;s ego.</p>
<p>If all I am posting on my fan page is information about my book or signing events or promotions, it&#8217;s more of the advertising we are all scrambling to escape. Modern humans are BOMBARDED with ads and can&#8217;t even go to the BATHROOM without an ad shoved up our nose. For more on this, read my post:</p>

<p>We don&#8217;t like ads. We don&#8217;t share them and we cannot connect with them. We are also in an age of information GLUT. How many of you woke up this morning and thought, &#8220;You know what I need? More crap to READ!&#8221; I hear social media experts tell writers to provide information. Be experts. Post links to articles.</p>
<p>For the love of chocolate, NO!</p>
<p>No offense, but novelists are not experts, you are <em>storytellers. </em></p>
<p>The blunt truth is that if we need to know something <em>we will google it</em>. But aside from that, I want to point out something VERY IMPORTANT. Information connects on the LEFT side of the brain, the analytical side. FICTION, however, is emotional.</p>
<p>***This works for NF writers, too, btw.</p>
<p>HOW EFFECTIVE IS IT TO SELL A RIGHT-BRAIN PRODUCT WITH A LEFT-BRAIN APPROACH? That makes no sense. Even home insurance commercials try to connect with emotion. They don&#8217;t pay for a thirty minute commercial about statistics. They post THIS:</p>

<p><strong>Let Us CARE</strong></p>
<p>This is why it is <i>especially </i>important for fiction authors to engage. Connect emotionally. You have an <em>emotional </em>product. People can&#8217;t connect emotionally to yet another DBW article about how <em>Barnes &amp; Noble&#8217;</em>s stock is tanking.</p>
<p>They CAN however connect to kittens, Sharknado, tales of missing socks, superheroes, kid stories, pet stories, Mayhem and Grumpy Cat. They have more to say about bacon than Smashwords or our book being free on KDP.</p>
<p>There are writers who seriously believe that Facebook is out to get them because their fan pages <em>are being hidden. </em>NO. It&#8217;s just that, in the Digital Age, there is a steep price for being <strong>boring.</strong></p>
<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>It isn&#8217;t your job to visit my author page to pay homage to Kristen&#8217;s ego.</strong> </span></p>
<p>Engage us, talk to us, stop selling to us and guess what? We will <em>like</em> coming to your page. And we will have fun and &#8220;<em>L</em><em>ike&#8221;</em> stuff, comment and SHARE your content. Then guess what?</p>
<p>And this is the cool part.</p>
<p>Since people will <em>enjoy</em> hanging out and talking on your page?  <span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>Your fan page (or personal page)</strong> <strong>will show up in their news feeds.</strong> </span>You won&#8217;t have to pay to promote. Awesome, right?</p>
<p><strong>Common Sense</strong></p>
<p>How many of you loooooove hanging out with people who won&#8217;t stop talking about themselves? What? No one? *crickets chirping*</p>
<p>So if this behavior isn&#8217;t a good idea for dating, the workplace or a dinner party, then why in the name of marshmallow peeps is this considered a good plan on <em>social media</em>? How many of you have a family member or friend who never talks to you unless she is selling Amway, Avon or vitamins?</p>
<p>Do we <em>like </em>those friends/family members? Or do we filter their calls?</p>
<p><strong>Use the Tool, Don&#8217;t BE One</strong></p>
<p>Facebook has over a BILLION active users so it is highly advantageous for authors to use it, but it&#8217;s a tool. We need to use tools properly or we will wear ourselves out and look stupid&#8230;like using a nail gun to slice a pork roast. Makes a mess, is ineffective and renders said <del>victim</del> pork roast inedible.</p>

<p>Today, I&#8217;m letting <a href="http://www.lisahallwilson.com" target="_blank">Lisa Hall-Wilson</a> guest post again for me, because she has a really wonderful lesson to share. Few things can pull a reader out of a story like us&#8212;the writer&#8212;bungling the details. I know I once tossed a book in a drawer because the heroine put &#8220;the safety on&#8221; a revolver.</p>
<p>It annoyed me.</p>
<p>It was a small but important detail the author could have gotten right had she done a little homework and asked the right people some simple questions. And, since the rest of her story involved action and guns and my husband is on a military shooting team, I assumed the rest of the story would probably just have me yelling, &#8220;WTH? NO!&#8221;</p>

<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>Getting Details Wrong Annoys Readers!</strong></span></p>
<p>One of the most overlooked items in a writer’s toolbox is conducting interviews. Doesn’t matter whether you’re writing fiction, non-fiction, articles, novels or blogging, being able to ask for and run a successful interview is an essential skill.</p>
<p>We don’t have to be that pushy reporter shoving a hand-held recorder in people’s faces. Being polite and professional will go a long way. I wrote a post over at the BookShelf Muse on <a href="http://thebookshelfmuse.blogspot.com/2013/05/5-tips-to-landing-that-interview.html" target="_blank">how to ask for an interview</a> so make sure you check that out.</p>
<p><i>Sure, sure – I get how interviews are important for journalists. But I write fiction.</i></p>
<p>OK – do you have a professional in your novel, the protagonist say, who has a job you’ve never done? One novelist wrote a series of novels about a group of adopted siblings: one was a hostage negotiator, another a fireman, another a cop, another a pediatrician, another a crime scene investigator. Do you really think this author had worked all those jobs? How did she know so much about each one?</p>
<p>She interviewed people!</p>
<p>We can’t learn everything from Google or a book. We can’t. We need anecdotes, first-person been there stories, someone to debunk the Hollywood stereotypes. Nothing pulls you in like the tiny details unique to that profession or situation, and nothing is more annoying than when an author gets those details wrong.</p>
<p>We want to get it right, and that means talking to people who have actually done that job!</p>
<p><i>You don’t get it. I’m a writer. I spend half the day working up the courage to tweet or post a status on Facebook. I can’t interview anyone.</i></p>
<p>That attitude isn’t going to cut it. Chin up – pen out. This is part of the job. Successful novelists interview people when researching a novel. Whether they’re researching a profession, or need advice on a particular scene, readers trust you (the author) to get the details right.</p>
<p>If you’re fortunate, you’ll have friends, friends of friends, family, or acquaintances you can reach out to. Certainly, even as a journalist, my job is a lot easier when I can pick from the low-hanging fruit as it were. Those I already know or have access to.</p>
<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>Interviewing is a skill we can learn.</strong></span> The first couple of times may be intimidating, but being prepared goes a long way. Running a good interview doesn’t require talent as much as it requires practice, preparation, and dose of courage.</p>
<p>As a freelance journalist, I’ve interviewed best-selling authors, JUNO-winning musicians, comedians, drug addicts, a celebrity fashion designer, former prostitutes, police officers, firefighters, pastors, and people with a great story to tell. The one thing all these sources had in common was a desire to make sure <b>I got the details right</b>.</p>
<p><b><i>“Fiction is the truth inside the lie.” Stephen King</i></b></p>
<p>I have a romantic suspense novel collecting dust on a shelf. In one scene I needed to set a fire in an old farmhouse to trap my two protagonists in the upper storey, but I needed the arsonist to get away clean and there couldn’t be any proof it was arson. So, what did I do?</p>
<p>I interviewed a firefighter.</p>
<p>Now, the key to these interviews is to present the source (the interviewee) with the planned scenario – like the one above. This way you get the benefit of their experience. You put too many filters on the situation and they’ll just tell you what you want to hear instead of what will make the scene pop with realism. He gave me an incredibly creative answer I couldn’t have come up with in a million years – whereas – he’d seen it done.</p>
<p>He also let me feel his hands. Hey – don’t laugh. I was working on a romance novel where the main protagonist was a firefighter. In a romance novel the feel of a man’s hands is an important detail. I imagined a fireman’s hands would be rough from hauling hoses and swinging axes, etc. But nope – they were very smooth, like a mechanic’s hand. The details make such a huge difference!</p>
<p>And… I’ve never been back to that fire hall. LOL</p>

<p>You’re asking the wrong questions when it comes to Facebook. Time to take off the ski gloves and tuque. Let’s get some things straight. <span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>Facebook is about relationships.</strong></span></p>
<p>Here’s some tough love. *pats pet beaver on head*</p>
<p>There’s a reason your Facebook page isn’t doing well. Don’t blame edge rank. Don’t blame the Zuck. If you go canoeing on Lake Superior without a paddle you’re… well, we know how that ends. Superior is a big a$$ lake that changes its mood without warning, you’re competing with giant ships and freighters on the radar and all you’re doing is waving your arms in the air.</p>
<p>You know what the little boats do to navigate a big lake? They stick together! <span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>WANAs stick together.</strong></span></p>

<p>It’s time to take the string off your mittens and put away the kiddie snow shovel. I’m going to really dish here on what’s not working. *Throws extra paddle*</p>
<p>This is stuff I typically save for my 6 week course on Facebook, but desperate times call for desperate measures.</p>
<p><b><i>We’re writers! We Are Not Alone. Chin up. Pen out.</i></b></p>
<p><b><i></i></b><b>1.     </b><b>You have no plan.</b></p>
<p>How do you measure success if you don’t know what you want your page to do for you? Where’s the line between pass and fail? Writers/Authors on social media, essentially, are selling themselves (your humor, your insights, your knowledge, your expertise), not what your product can do.</p>
<p>What are the BIG authors using Facebook for? <b>They’re NOT using Facebook to sell books.</b> They’re using FB to build community/tribe (aka: relationships), give inside scoops/info/deals, drive traffic to another site (like their website or Amazon), and they’re using it to build an email list.</p>
<p><b>2.     </b><b>You aren’t meeting a need.</b></p>
<p><b>Fans connect with authors on Facebook for access.</b> They want a look behind the curtain – they want to see OZ. When you post a comment on a favorite writer/artist/band’s page, how elated are you if they respond to YOUR comment? Nonfiction authors are offering their expertise – their wisdom. They give loads of advice away – for FREE. And…wait for it…people still buy their books. Where do you get your ideas? What are you researching? What opportunities are you excited about?</p>
<p>Identify your brand, and stick to it. Have a plan to answer these needs. Be intentional. Be approachable. Be REAL.</p>
<p><b>3.     </b><b>Your content sucks.</b></p>
<p>I mean this in the nicest possible way. *here’s a piece of maple fudge* Would you share the stuff you’re posting? Be honest. Blog titles are huge factors in share-ability, so are images. Is it all about you all the time – your blog, your books, your contests, etc.? Always always provide value. This is the WANA way. For every ten posts, only one should be self-promotional – at best! Don’t be that lone canoe on Superior!</p>
<ul>
<li>Share things YOU care about, are meaningful to YOU. What makes you mad, what makes you shake your fist at the world, what makes you laugh, what makes you cry. (Because people want to see OZ – they want to get to know you.)</li>
<li>Fans are drawn to writers because we’re thinkers and observers – share your quirky humor, your passions, editorial comments, etc.</li>
<li>Be positive. Nobody wants to hang out with the guy on a soap-box, the Debbie-downer, or listen to constant cries for help.</li>
</ul>
<p><b>4.     </b><b>You’re splitting your brand.</b></p>
<p>You have how many pages? You know how many you need? One. 1. Uno. That’s it. When you’re Nicholas Sparks and Hollywood options every book you publish you can set up pages for your books, until then you need one author page. You don’t need one for your blog(s), for your cat, for your book.</p>
<p>Seriously.</p>
<p><i>Just one.</i></p>
<p><i></i><b>5.     </b><b>You never show up!</b></p>
<p>Remember the main reason why fans search out authors on Facebook? They want to see OZ. They want access to you they ordinarily would have to travel to a book signing or writer’s conference to have. Respond quickly. Respond compassionately. Actually care. Just posting a link to your blog is not showing up. Blasting BUY MY BOOK spam is not showing up. Why should fans show up if you never do?</p>
<p><b>6.     </b><b>You’re forcing yourself to be something you’re not.</b></p>
<p>Some of you started a page because somebody who sells ‘stuff’ (like vacuum cleaners, or blenders, or shoes) told you to. This is why you need a plan. (See #1) Decide what you want a page to do. Maybe you’re better using a profile?</p>
