In my mind there's a way in which AI is trying to create content that people will like without being able to have a reaction of its own.

I've actually had times where someone tasked me with "writing something" where I didn't really understand the appeal, and as a result, even though I could imitate the style, I couldn't (on my own) recognize when what I had written was good or bad. I felt like I was fumbling in the dark, blind and numb.

I think in some ways the charm of The Never-ending Story (the film) is how the story has a kind of proto story nature. There's just enough there for it to feel familiar. I agree with you that there are lots of gaps, but I think the film is done in such a way that audiences fill in those gaps without even realizing it.

It makes me think about how a good story often has its weaknesses, but when it's done right, the reader doesn't care. The reader is too busy appreciating the good aspects. They want to forgive and overlook the shortcomings so that they can focus on and enjoy the strengths.

Never saw the movie but loved your take on it, Kristen. I get pulled up by Beta readers all the time for things like letting kids play outside ALL day and only come home when they're hungry ("you can't do that!"). Well, WE did. But we were blessed by living in different times, and didn't know it :)

And, what's even more magical about The Neverending Story, is that, like Spawn, I never thought of questioning it before! LOL. Brilliant post, Kristen. I laughed the whole way through and felt heartened by the message. We needed that right now :)

This is fascinating. I have defended the Titanic movie (1997), though that frequently gets criticised (and I agree with some of those criticisms). In 2024, I stumbled upon the German rom-com Isi und Ossi, and while you could definitely criticise things about that film, I thought the main characters were far more layered, and I ended up writing analyses of them long after my first watch.

Yes! Wholeheartedly agree with your post. I knew people would grow bored with AI perfection because life isn't perfect and magic is one of the main attractions of reading stories. The horse scene saddens me still. I've always loved dragons, in fact I have a luck dragon on my bed so I never abandon my inner child. Love reading your blogs Kristen- thank you.
