This is a bundle special for those who want to learn, refine, or brush up on the basics with "There and Back Again: From GOOD Idea to Successful Story" as well as challenge themselves with the more advanced techniques that we'll go over in "The Unreliable Narrator: Turning Your Reader's World Upside Down."

Two classes, twice the information, but with a special class/personalized workshop only available to those who take advantage of the bundle.

The workshop will take place in our virtual classroom after the class on the unreliable narrator to give time for participants to at least try and formulate their own log-lines before the workshop, which will be held on June 18th, 2020 from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. EST (NYC Time).

One technique I use for testing the veracity of a story is the log-line.

Log-lines are crucial for understanding the most important detail, "WHAT is the story ABOUT?"

If we can't answer this question in a single sentence? Brain surgery with a spork will be easier than writing a synopsis. Pitching? Querying? A nightmare.

Revisions will also take far longer and are likely to be grossly ineffective.

Marketing? Fuggetaboutit.

As authors, we tend to think that EVERY detail is important or others won't "get" our story. Not the case.

If we aren't pitching an agent, the log-line is incredibly beneficial for staying on track with a novel or even diagnosing serious flaws within the story before we've written an 80,000 word disaster.

Perhaps the protagonist has no goal or a weak goal. Maybe the antagonist needs to be stronger or the story problem clearer. Maybe you are cramming too much into one book, when the idea really needs to be a series.

This is a two-hour interactive workshop.

• The first hour will cover the components of a strong log-line and you'll learn to spot red flags that a concept is flawed.
• The second hour of class, we'll workshop log-lines. If we go over that hour, that's fine. This is a special class for YOU.

There and Back Again: From Good Idea to Successful Novel

Class Description:

Great ideas, sadly, aren't enough to craft a novel, let alone a successful one audiences want to pay money to read. Fantastic ideas abound. Seems everyone we meet, when we mention we're writers, the first words out of their mouths are, "I've always had a fantastic IDEA for a story!"

• The basics of structure that will work for plotters, planner, pantsers, and planners, etc.
• Varying types of story structure (Aristotelian, nonlinear, parallel time-lines, etc.)
• Ways to make sure your idea and story are sound before you have an editing disaster

The Unreliable Narrator: Turning Your Reader's World Upside Down

Class Description:

Audiences take for granted that the first person they meet in the story is trustworthy. This assumption can be used for advantage as well as for magnificent story effect. I WILL warn you, however, that this is a highly advanced technique.

This said, the unreliable narrator is highly effective and has been used in many genres from general (or literary fiction) like 'Fight Club', to mystery 'Gone Girl,' to psychological suspense 'Black Swan,' just to name a few. But, as mentioned, this literary technique is far from easy, and not for the faint of heart.

This class, however, is here to break down this complex device and help you better understand how you might be able to use it in your own work.

We will cover the basics of structure, if your story is a good candidate for the unreliable narrator, and, if so, how to gain the audience's trust so as to use it to capitalize on that necessary (but forgivable) betrayal to create that delightful twist at the end.
