Here in America, we will be celebrating Independence Day. Americans believed they could create something different, something better. Meanwhile England was all like, “A government of the people, by the people and for the people? Are you HIGH? We protect you from wild Indians and send you supplies. We keep order.” Writers are now facing the same shift.

My audience is creative people, fans of Dr. Who, Star Wars and Firefly. People who love vampires and love stories and Renaissance fairs. I wanted a cover that was creative, one that might even look like a novel had been misplaced among the “Target Your Audience and Blow Them Away” marketing books. Hey, I’m a misfit. My book should reflect that, right?

The hard truth is that we will always be open to people who want something for free and yes, technology can exacerbate this. Making more laws or making e-books more difficult to download or pricing them the same as hardbacks doesn’t deter thieves. In my opinion, it only encourages this kind of behavior.

What Turow doesn’t appear to grasp is that technology, particularly communication technology exacts sweeping cultural change that cannot be reversed (short of war or global apocalypse). Most modern humans aren’t going to trade in their flatscreens and XBoxes for a “good old-fashioned story told by the fire.”
